My biggest weakness is Dr. Pepper. I have changed the way I eat and been training for upcoming tri's and bike races for the upcoming year. But, I cannot give up the DP.

For your training, are soft drinks completely eliminated? Is there something you just can't give up that you know is not good for your training?

I need some help here......Hahaha.....

Purge it from your fridge and just drink water. Save the DP for "special" occasions, like when you have your weekly cheat meal, have ONE can.

If you think you can't stop cold turky, try some diet rite. Their cola actually tasted something like DP at first when I switched a few years ago doing atkins.

I can see two answers to this question.  First, you have to have rewards.  Make the DP your reward after a good workout or at the end of the week or something to motivate you.  Now you didn't say if this was a 1-2 a day habit or a case a day, which would be something to work on reducing.

The other option is ask to youself a few more questions.  Are you trying to break any records?  Are you planning on quiting your day job and becoming a pro triathlete?  Are you trying to go beyond losing weight, being happy and healthy to a place of only eating/drinking things that are going to benefit your training?  For most of us here, these are not realistic.  Many of the people I have talked with on BT, are doing triathlons as a way to motivate them to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle.  The only records they want to beat are those set by themselves or their friends.  They have no desire to gain sponsorships and spend every weekend atop the podium.

For me, I just want to stay interested in working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  And training as hard as I do allows me to eat or drink things from time to time that are not healthy.  I would feel guilty eating a 2500 calorie diet if I wasn't what my body needed to fuel my exercise (and I've lost weight doing it, from 220 to 211 in 3 months).  I think if you go at anything too hard, without rewards and having fun, you will never last.  And for me, that would mean another wasted exercise/healthy living attempt.

HA!!!! I have the same weakness, love the DP.  I had to slowly reduce the amount I drank.  If you are like me and had several a day, then start to cut back slowly.  I am to the point now where I have it once a week on my cheat day.   STOP BY IT BY THE 2 LITER.  Cans only!!!!!!! To tempting to drink, and you feel like you need to drink it cuz no one really likes flat soda. LOL its hard but you can do it.

I brew my own beer/wine/mead and normally have 5-8 different beers on tap at all times. But I have to limit myself to only drinking on the weekends. Last year I ran two full marathons and a bunch of other races and still gained 40 pounds because of all the beer.

OK I will go with the obvious first " Diet Dr Pepper taste more like real Dr Pepper".

I was a coke guy- loved it, had to have it, and only the real deal, no diet stuff for me.  Well - I just quit drinking them as part of trying to drop some lbs and now after about 6 mos I can't stand them, they are too sweet!  I like and drink diet coke but cannot handle even the coke zero as it tastes too sweet. I pretty much go with Coffee in the am and water or citrus green tea the rest of the time with a diet coke mixed in every other day or 2 --  funny how that worked out.......

I used to drink 2 or 3 large (32 or 44 oz) cups a day.  Sugar up/sugar down kinda thing

I made the switch to diet. First month is real hard.  Now I need diet DP or diet Pepsi in my life.

Along with that I'm down 40 pounds and that whole sugar rush/crash syndrome is so much easier to manage.

I love pop. Right now i keep buying it and end up having one a day ... .  Sure i could use less sugar in my life but I generally eat well and live an active life. Why sweat over something I like and don't overindulge in?  It might be different if this was a long line of bad habits and it was impacting my health but it's not.

i've had to add softdrinks to my diet b/c they help me keep the weight on...

as long as you drink DP in moderation, you're going to be ok...don't cut it out completely, just have a can, not 5.

I think I was addicted to DP in college. I would CRAVE it. I would have to get one from 7-11... a Super Big Gulp. HAD TO HAVE IT.

At the time I had no concept of it being x calories per serving or that I was just dosing my body full of sugar.

Finally one day, I swore off it. Told myself I wasn't allowed to drink one sip of it... ever. I knew that with even one sip, I would not stop drinking it.

It worked. I got off it...and when I have tasted it... years later... it just didn't taste all that great anymore.

Go cold turkey. Do it now.

One can of regular DP is around 150 calories, The bottle ups it to around 250.  There are better ways to get calories just give them up.

I am 16 days sober.  I gave up diet cokes cold turkey end of last month.  I was up to more than a six pack a day and felt like I could not get through my day without them.  I can tell you that I now feel better and more hydrated now that I am just drinking water.  I have gotten over the most intense longings and cravings so far, but it is easier to see myself everyday as not "needing" them.   A friend of mine recommended not trying to quench my bodies thirst with something I would not wash my ten year old car with....

I have a couple of ideas and will throw in my 2 cents as well

1) Do they make Dr. Pepper in those 100 calorie, mini-can sizes. like Coke?  I don't know if they do, but if so, that would be one way to allow yourself a treat, but reduce your overall intake.

2) You could stop buying it at the grocery story, and just order DP when you go out to eat at restaurants.

3)  For me, I finally realized that my addiction was the carbonation.  To get over the negative affects of soda/pop/coke, I switched to carbonated water (like La Croix).  This allows me my carbonation fix, but doesn't have all the sugar, calories, caffeine, acid, diruetics, etc.  Sometimes I even mix 1/2 sparkling water with 1/2 apple juice for a sweet flavor.   The Germans drink this commonly and it is called Apfelschorleh (sorry about the spelling?)  Even with apple juice, the sparkling water is still way less calories, and it ups your water intake!  It's worth a shot finding out!

Mountain Dew was my poison ever since high school.  I quit soda completely a few years ago cold turkey and noticed a huge difference.  At first I tried drinking it only when we went out to eat but I found that I wouldn't have it for a few days and then go out to eat and suck down glass after glass of Dew or Coke.  So from my personal experience I would try switching to diet.  Diet DP also has the cherry vanilla version which is really good.  I now have a diet now and then and its a real treat.

I was a Dr. Pepper junkie and now I'm on the Diet Dr. Peppers every once in a while.  As far as diet sodas go they are probably the closest to the real deal.

I freaken love DP. I believe DP was passed down from the gods to us lowly mortals. I am such a purest it makes me mad when they offer Mr. Pib as a substitute. I can no longer buy it for the house because I could drink a case in one day if I let my self which is why I use to be 65 lbs heavier. Now I only get it at a dinner or maybe if I'm in line at the store and I did some kind of exercise that day. I buy diet DP and cherry coke zero for my house and I still have cut that intake down allot.
