Subject: 2010 Iron Half ?

I have a goal in 2010 to do a Iron half in July or August.

But, I want to do one that is 2-3 hours from home (Rochester), and one that is well run. Is there such an animal?

Any ideas are welcome.

If well run is your limiter, than skip the Square Lake half in September.

I can say from experience that the Liberty Triathlon is very well run and enjoyable. That's in Maple Plain and should be within 3 hours from Roch (prob less). I've done only the Oly, but can know the whole course and the race is very well done.

I have also head good things about Chisago.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't notice the July-Aug timeframe. Liberty is in June. However, it's midway through June and worth the extra effort...

Chisago is in July. It's probably about 2.5 hours from you.

If you want to drive the other way, Pigman is narrowly within range (north of Cedar Rapids). Big event with plenty of reviews, though I have never done it. I did the short in Chisago last year and was very impressed with the organization.

I think if there is anyway you can move your race date goal up a bit, you should shoot for the Liberty Half. That was my first half and I really like the race. I did it the first two years they had it. It is very well run. I also like the course a lot better than the Chisago Lakes course. Haven't done Pigman, but I know there are some people in Rochester that have gone down there for it. You should check on TriRochester site.
