Just curious as to what some average times would be in each event and overall for someone doing their first sprint tri with little or no previous experience in any of the disciplines. I'd just like some feedback to give me some more perspective as to how I am progressing and what I should be aiming for. Thanks.

Jo

Sprints are not standard distances. Even when two sprints say they have the same distances they tend to have different mat placement and such so even those cannot be directly compared.

Look at the times of the sprint you're looking to do from last year and see what people did it in. That's about the only way you'll have an idea and even then if the weather is significantly different or they alter the layout a bit your times will be different with your capabilities exactly the same.

x2.  That's what I did.  The swim will have the biggest swing in times year over year, but if the bike and run course remains the same, it will be pretty close.

Like others have said timing is very difficult. I like to focus on pacing rather than times. I'd say for a relatively competitive first timer a 1:45-2:00 per 100 swim, 17.5-19 mph bike, and 8-9 min mile are solid paces to feel good about. Of course, some will be faster and some slower but if you want some numbers that's my take.

You really shouldn't be "aiming" for a specific time or split, if you are basing that goal on what other people may or may not do... base your goal times on your training, and what you think you are capable of.

That said, it's hard to resist the urge to allow that kind of thing to influence your goals, so the best place to look to see how you might stack up, is the previous year's result for the race you are doing.

I was a pretty strong swimmer but a crappy cyclist and runner (only started doing them three months before the event) and my times for a 750m-20k-5k sprint last year were:

13 mins
46 mins
31 mins

I was in the top 20% for the swim but the bottom 20% for the bike and run. I'm doing the same event in two weeks time, with a new bike and a year's extra training and I'm aiming for:

12 mins
40 mins
28 mins
