What a frustrating swim!  I don't know if I was over thinking things or what.

I've decided to open up the wallet here.  What do you think would be a better investment; swim lessons or a wetsuit?

(I have two months before my first tri.)

The swim lessons, assuming they help, will last you for as long as you're able to swim. The wetsuit will come in handy during a fair amount of races over your lifetime, but what about all the training swims you'll do? I say lessons.

Swim lessons.  Improving your form will help you in all races.  Buying a wetsuit will only help you in races that are wetsuit-legal, and still not as much as improved abilities will.

Yeah, never, ever swim with it again. Then you get used to not having it and you don't cheat yourself in the pool

That is just incorrect... A pull bouy used correctly as a training aid is not cheating yourself or using it as a crutch. just like, fins, paddles, a snorkle, bands, and bungees... Used correctly a bouy is a valuable training aid and can help you develope a more focused and powerful pull in the water.

Only somewhat incorrect. It's only a good tool if you use it properly. The OP suggested that he can swim with it for 45 mins, which is an incorrect use. He needs to learn to swim properly without it before he can use it as it is intended.

John

Really, did you not read all the times I said "used correctly??? I was not addressing the  OP question and comment about using it for 45 minutes, as I did not quote it. I qioted the statement from above where the poster said "never swim with it again and it is cheating yourself".  That was the incorrect statement I was referring to...

Read my statement again John, I said it is a good tool just like fins, paddles etc is used correctly.... Not really sure where you found fault in my statement as i was not addressing the OP statement.... and yes of course swimming with it for 45 minutes would be silly....

I've been there (still am there, a bit) and used the pull buoy to get myself up to swimming long enough that I could complete my Oly swim, which I knew would be wet suit legal.  Since you may not be able to depend on using the wet suit, I would definitely advocate for the swimming lessons.  If you get a wet suit later it's just a bonus.

Getting away from the buoy is hard at first, because you will definitely over kick to compensate.  Try going to the pool, without your watch or anything, and just start swimming.  Stop half way if you need to regroup, but focus on barely kicking.  Just a little flutter, with no splash.  I promise you that a flutter is enough to keep you buoyant.

I would recommend giving the kickboard a rest too.  The type of kicking you do with that (unless you can really control it to that flutter) will be too much for what you need here.

Just go slow.  And find the swim coach.

A swim coach it is!

I had talked to a coach a few weeks back for me and my wife but had decided as of yet.  It's time.  I called her back this morning and I'm good to go.  Will start my first lesson this evening.

I know I can do the bike and I can limp through the 5k at the very least.  If I can't swim the 800 meters, the rest of it doesn't matter.Wink

AWW Man, I tuned-in hoping to see a picture of Fin-Man from IMFL.

Good luck with the swim coach buddy.  There's a guy in my office who's a great runner (sub 3 hour marathon) but can't swim well so he's joined a masters swim team to get some coaching.  I wish you both luck.  We're rooting for you.

The pool I go to has a masters swim team too.  They don't meet during the summer.  I might look into joining it come fall.
