Are they pretty accurate?   My GPS didn't agree with them, but then again my GPS told me I stopped at mile 6.5 so I know something was wrong with it!

I've ridden a lot (too much, say my friends... but I digress) on the trail, and for the most part, I've found them to be pretty accurate.... not necessarily down to the 0.01 mile, but accurate enough.

While we are talking about the W&OD trail, I've always wanted to ask is this a paved trail?  If so it sounds like a fun ride from end to end given the fact that it is probably pretty flat.  Noted one time a statement that they frown on people riding fast on the trail... what exactly would be classified as fast?  It is a bit of a ride for me with plenty off good roads down my way, but a long flat run might be fun to try sometime.

Yes, it is paved, and flat.  You'll find people of all speeds on the trail... going "fast" (in the 20s), you'll see people at that speed.  As long as you're courteous about it, it shouldn't be a problem... but be prepared to yell "On your left!" a lot, especially if you're going at peak hours.

Yeah time of day and which day would make a lot of difference on how fast you can safely go.

Oh, and also where on the trail you are... once you get out past Ashburn Road (mile 27.5) and west, things are a lot less crowded.

although there is a "speed limit" on there, I know that police have been out in the higher mile marking areas cracking down on people going too fast, and not stopping at the intersections.

Did my first weekend late morning ride last Saturday.  Got a little peeved at people riding two across at 5 mph with the left rider ACROSS the middle by a couple of feet.

My wife said that I should run a race and donate some of the proceeds to put up more signs about trail courtesy.

while that is annoying, imagine coming up on them from the opposite direction, they're blocking your lane and they don't budge!

I've been thinking about a road bike to get in miles during the winter, but if I'm going to be riding the local paths, I'll stick with my 30 pound mountain bike as I imagine it would be really annoying to try to go over 20mph with all the traffic and stop signs.

I feel that the markers are accurate, I basically live on the trail, if it had a swim lane I'd use that too. If I go out for serious training on the bike (time/speed/distance) not just to get some saddle time, I go out during the week days and it still has people on it, but not too many. If you go out on the weekends expect to have traffic and understand you are not gonna make your time run, so don't get irritated with the children or people out that don't understand your motives and are just out to relax. There have been some nasty accidents with bike vs. bike from overzealous people making risky moves with a lot of traffic. I moved to my house mainly for the access to the trail. I live around mile marker 33.0
