Subject: Constant Injuries and Illness...
It seems like all this year I've either been injured or sick.

I have had a torn achilles so have just begun return to run 2 weeks ago, a 4 month lay off from running, my favourite of the 3 sports.

It seems I can't seem to put any period of 2 weeks together of training without my body breaking down or my immune system and me becoming tired, sick and frustrated.

I take 1-2 days off per week and try to train 9-11 times per week.

I'm just getting extremely frustrated with training and just can't seem to get any consistency at all. I'm swimming 3-4 times per week for 1 to 1.5 hours and then cycling 3-4 times, 1-2 hours 3 times a week then a longish bunch ride in the weekends.

What should I do, I want to enjoy training and get the most out of it. Should I cut back on the amounts of trainings I have? Or the length of each workout? i.e. swim and bike only 3x per week max? Or shorten the swims and bikes to half or 2/3 of the time I'm doing now.

Thanks.

With nothing in your training logs, it's hard to say.... What kind of intensity are your workouts? If you're going out and trying to go your hardest every time you swim, bike, or run, then that could be your issue. IMO MOST of your workouts should be at a fairly easy effort, with speedwork thrown in for each sport maybe 1 or 2 sessions per week. If it's not intensity, then maybe you tried to build your volume too fast. If that's the case then maybe back off on the volume and slowly build back up again (adding just a little time and distance in each sport each week). You might also want to see a doctor to rule out any medical reasons as to why you keep getting sick.....

Back down the intensity, the volume and the frustration ....... Step back and just do some activities to keep you in shape and active and give your body time to heal up everything.  One of the tell tale signs of over-training is weakened immune system and becoming prone to injury.

Most Type A people (i.e. - 99% of triathletes) hit a bad spot and plow right through it hoping it will get better.  Sometimes, more often than not, it gets worse.  So take a step back, take a deep breath and really evaluate where you are.  There are times when you just need to take a break.

I almost always say "You're not really overtrained," but in your case it sounds like you're the real deal. From a medical perspective, I think Daremo is right--time for a big, long break and easing back into it.

Without knowing anything about you or your training I would guess you are doing too much too soon. By that is not about volume or intensity but total training load (which is both), start with a duration and intensity that seems easy and manageable. Make sure you are resting properly and your nutrition is adequate. Once the sessions seem almost too easy increase the load a bit. I don't know how long you have been training ubt if you are a beginner you need up to 6-8 weeks of adaptation period of simple training loads to allow your body to get use to the demands of training before you start doing any reall intense/long work.

PS. I doubt you are over-trained based on the info provided above...

Good luck.
