Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So yesterday evening I had 2 parties to attend. My 30 YEAR High School reunion and my little sister's 40th birthday bash. I'm in the last big weeks before the taper for my HIM. I rode my bike 63 miles in the heat and humidity in the morning. I then had to TAKE A NAP in anticipation of staying up way past my usual bed time. (first sign of OLDNESS). Reunion began at 6pm and at 9:30 pm left the reunion and went to the bar where my sister's party was. Got home a little after 1am, in bed by 1:30. Slept in until 8am (unheard of) and felt as if I had been run over by a truck! Not hungover, as I only had 2 glasses of wine the entire night, just dead tired, like I couldn't move. Had a 90 minute run on the plan for the day. Ate breakfast, drank coffee....no use, not happening. At 10:30 went to take a nap on the couch. Finally did get the run in later in the afternoon. I participate in triathlon to keep fit and hopefully young in body, mind and spirit. However I've found that my social life has taken a major hit. I probably wasn't very good company after about 11pm. As everyone else was dancing and laughing, I found myself sitting and staring glassy eyed as people attempted to talk to me. Couldn't hear them anyway, as the music was WAY TOO LOUD (another sign of OLDNESS) I love this sport and if I had to make a choice I'm going to choose fitness over partying, but it sure would be nice to be able to go out for the night, and not feel like I'm 92 the next day. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do a pretty good job of balancing both, but it may get harder as I get older and I'm not training for a HIM like you...I get antsy if I don't go out for a while...than I just have to got out, socialize, and have a couple beers. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm right there with you sister! But I embrace my "oldness" who cares what they think, and I feel pretty young when I am placing in the top 15% OVERALL!! That is the best reward... |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You feel old? I'm 19 years younger than you and I never would've lasted as long as you did last night. I start to become unfun at about 9:30, 10 on a good night. The only events I hang in there until the end for are bachelorette parties, weddings, and New Years Eve. (And any other random event that pops up that I feel is incredibly important to the person who wants me there/invited me along.) Anything else, I drive myself there and I leave early. Glad you had a fun night last night. Good luck with the rest of your HIM training. |

(there's that OLDness creeping in again) Oh Well.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I truly believe that we underestimate what we are asking of our bodies. Now, if I was just doing light housework all day, I wouldn't be so zonked at night. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I figured training for an oly, or even a sprint, is enough to stay healthy. Training for anything longer is more like satisfying the sense of accomplishment, or competiveness. My sole purpose of exercising to stay healthy. Therefore I only participate in sprint and oly distance races. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know just how you feel. I have my 40th class reunion coming up, and I can't stay up past 9:00! Matter of fact I make myself sit in the livingroom until 9:00 because if I go anywhere near the bedroom before that I find myself sneaking in under the covers. I do love the way the training makes me feel, just came in from a 28 mile bike and this was after taking care of my 2 grandchildren for the weekend! Oh and naps, I LOVE MY NAP, nothing wrong with a good nap IMO! Best of luck with your training and your big event, just make sure you keep your nap on the training schedule! |

![]() | ![]() If it makes you feel better, I am 35 and am lucky to make it past 9 PM most nights. I almost feel asleep standing up friday night at a party and had to take a 2 hour nap the next day to function. Only napped 45 minutes today. My wife is usually in bed by 8 PM. She also prefers to eat dinner at 4:30. She does not kint, like cats or wear house coats fortunately. |

Oh thank god we're nearly the same age.....I feared this was gonna be one of those posts by someone *much* younger, as I creep up on the 30 yr reunion -- hee hee (yeah, now all the 50 + ers will post back, right?) But I hear ya on all counts EXCEPT
So when I run out of gas, or need a nap, or always end up in bed at 9:00 to the scoffing and teasing of my niece, I smile inside knowing that with triathlon, even being BOP I'm fitter and healthier than so many..... EMBRACE THOSE NAPS!!! Parties are overrated :-> |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I'm old, just turned 50, but I feel I am in overall better shape than a lot of athletes and nearly all non-athletes 10 - 20 years younger than me. My 2009 accomplishments: 1. Completed a HIM (6:15) 2. Broke 7:30 in a mile 3. Bench pressed 225# 4. Averaged 21mph for 56 miles 5. Did 10 chinups ... and I had open heart surgery last year. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() At 56 yrs old I placed first in all 6 swiming events at the Senior Olympics, 3 firsts and 2 second place at Master Swim event, and first in my age group in my first sprint Tri this year. This is better than I did in all my high school or college competitions, so I feel great. However, after my normal 40 -50 mile bike it is home to the couch for that wonderful nap you all described. During the week, I have even learned to take a power nap at a red light, by listening to the traffic changes. Hmmmm, think I'll go to bed now. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So let me get this straight - you're in a pre-taper phase of HIM training (read: big volume), you do a 63 mile hot/humid ride earlier in the day, and scheduled not 1 but 2 parties that night. On top of that have a couple of glasses of wine (that small amount guaranteed to make you more sleepy than tipsy), stay out until 1 AM and you feel that you're tired because your OLD??? C,mon - you've got to be kidding!! There are definitely folks half your age that couldn't have done a fraction of that without crashing! Like others have said, I think we tend to forget the amount of work we ask of our bodies. Trust me, you should be tired after a day like that regardless of your age! |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am 53 and I too feel old sometimes. I am up most everyday by 4-5 am and I try to do some kind of trainig everyday. However, I am in bed by 9PM without fail. I would love taking naps again (I have taken naps since being a youngster), but my wife just thinks it is kind of lazy...go figure.. |

Reunion began at 6pm and at 9:30 pm left the reunion and went to the bar where my sister's party was. Pish. When I was in college my schedule was up at 5:30 for practice (Either swimming or x-country), breakfast at 8. Hour nap, classes from 10ish to 3. Second workout, nap, dinner and studying. Party every Wed/Fri/Sat unless out of town for a meet. (I was in a fraternity ![]() Oh, and of course you feel like a run over truck. You don't practice your partying anymore. It's just like triathlon, you gotta put in the party time and pay attention to your pacing. ![]() John |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would not worry too much about how late you can stay up or the level of entertainment you can provide. When 8 or 8:30 pm rolls around, I am in bed fast asleep. Have not been up for new years eve in three of four years. I can barely make it until the fireworks are over on the 4th of July. However, at nearly 50 years old I am in the best shape of my life. Probably the same is true for you. In my mind, that is pretty exciting and very much the opposite of, "OLDNESS". You are good to go. Just my opinion |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Problem with me staying up late (maybe a sign of old age) is that I still get up at the same time. Last time I stayed up til 4 am and I was up by 6 am. I decide that that is enough of that stuff and now just go to bed. |
