Did I really see someone mention LARPing here?  As in Live Action Role Play?

Yup! It was Renee. I swear she just can't get enough of it!! She's crazy into Larping. I think I have a picture of her character.

Just the other day I heard her say that she was only going to do tri's while "in character." I swear she'll be the fastest half-ling sorcerer out there!!!

That is awesome.  My brother is actually famous for his LARP character.  He plays Vampire:  The Masquarade.  People fly in from all over to kill off his character.  They always go home "dead" and dejected.  So sad.

OK, so I haven't had my morning coffee yet, and I see your subject. Now, I know what a LARP is although I've never had the suspension of disbelief to play one (limited imagination, me). So I'm thinking, LARP? Triathlon? What, we all get together and pretend to be doing IM? During my sprint tri I was pretending I was training for my oly, maybe we're not too far off here....

I'm thinking "M-Dot, the RPG" coming soon to Dragon*Con:
Roll your 38 sided die to see what your swim start is. Midway thru the swim (you are required to stand up at the table and flail your arms about in a freestyle motion) you have to roll 2 12-sided dice to see a) if you round the buoys at all or are DQ right there and b) what damage you take going into T1. If your Volunteer Team Leader (DM for you real geeks out there) is really nasty, you may find yourself doing battle with a sea monster at mile 1.5 (but it will turn out to be seaweed, and hallucinations because you failed to taper adequately).

I'm so patenting this.

OK, I have to apologize for that...it's just...early...and I'm not caffeinated...and I have been giggling about an IM LARP for the last 15 minutes till I got round to actually reading this thread.

I claim end of semester brainmush! Don't think less of me!

People really do this?  And FLY places to do it?  This is disturbing.  Seriously.

The same can be said (and often is) about triathlon.....and our costumes are far skimpier....a bit less makeup though

A couple of my college dorm-mates were in the Society for Creative Anachronism... Not exactly LARPing, but having a lot of fun with Medieval and Renaissance-style life... real jousts, tourneys, armor, costumes, the like.

One of them worked in the student computer lab at night with me. He would while the empty hours away hand assembling chain ring armor... one ring at a time...

Don't get me wrong- I'm all about dressing up and role playing, but it usually involves alcohol a hotel room somewhere.

What I really want to know is how you get your sword/weapon/magical thingies past airport security?

I just chatted with Renee. She says that whenever she has to travel...she just ships her weapons. I guess Fed Ex is reasonable. As far as her magic robes, and elf ears..she says that she just wears em.

Oh man.......Yeah, people fly to LARP. What is extra distrubing to me is that some fly to "kill" my little brother. Apparently he's mastered rock-paper-scissors......sad, I know.BGTwinDad....I think I know that guy. I had 2 friends in high school who handmade all their won gear including chainmail. Oh, the good old days when they'd make swords out of PVC piping, some foam and colored duct tape from the dollar store.....

The local library put on a demonstration by the SCA.

www.sca.org

Pretty cool stuff.  Kind of like a year-round rennaisance festival.  They did some "fighting".  Kind of an odd bunch of people.  And yes, they made their own chain mail.
