Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Do any other minneapolis/st paul dwellers wish we had a tri store convenient to us? I can find most of what I need bike-wise at biking stores since I don't have a tri bike and I go to REI for a lot of things since I have the credit card and I like the dividend! But I really wish I had something closer than gear west for clothing and other odds and ends. I want a new pair of tri shorts to race in but I just can't bear the drive out the gear west ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There is a tri store in the Twin Cities - it's in White Bear and called TriFitness. Their website isn't that great though...http://www.trifitnesswbl.com/. They aren't as big as Gear West, but they have big growth plans. Vicki is the owner and she's awesome. She also runs a training facility up the road from the store. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() take a "training" ride and bike out to Gear West!!! Its not that far! I am suprised there are not more bigger tri shops considering how popular the sport seems to be in the cities. With all the bike and running shops, IDK, good luck. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Actually I quite agree. Let's open one downtown, Sarah. You know there are a TON of folks who are down there and train in the area. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How do you get to Gear West on a bike without taking the highway? I bike to that area a lot, but never into Long Lake. I suppose it's safer now with the Hwy 12 bypass. But then it's hard to haul home your good stuff. jaredfore - 2009-07-01 2:41 PM take a "training" ride and bike out to Gear West!!! Its not that far! Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Oh - new and better idea. How about a co-op owned and run by cool local triathletes, of which we know a few... We could do classes and crap like that. How many time have you had to explain how to get ready for a first race, etc, etc, There could be a series at the shop. Yes, this is a good idea. Anyone got money? Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will check out the white bear lake store. Gotta be honest though when I think "metro" I don't think of White Bear Lake ![]() I joke with my friends that the only times I find myself in the suburbs is when I am on two wheels ![]() ![]() |

Gotta be honest though when I think "metro" I don't think of White Bear Lake ![]() ![]() ![]() I hear ya!!! I also live close to Noko, and would LOVE a more convenient Minneapolis shop. White Bear Lake = Long Lake for me (much worse, actually). Gear West is a great shop, and those folks have always done right by me, but I hate that friggin' drive. And no way I'm biking out there, although they would dig that if you did! ![]() I do believe Run N Fun in St Paul (on Randolph) stocks some tri clothes, but I keep forgetting to check 'em out when I'm in there. Will have to look sometime soon... Cheers, Chris |

I can't really speak to their selection but that might be an option that's close by. |

Will have to look sometime soon... Cheers, Chris I might be one of the few that will say "keep far away" from that store. I went in to check it out and was in the market for a new pair of running shoes. I was trying to ask the sales lady a couple questions about the Mizunos (which I already was using but was inquiring about a different model) and she said she didn't know anything about the shoe. I came close to asking her why she was working in a shoe store but she had already walked away. Both of my treks to RnF have been disappointing...rude/snobby staff and disappointing selection. Just my $0.02. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Realistically speaking... REI is one of my favorite places to get gear, clothes, etc. Very reachable by car or bike too |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() May I suggest Longfellow or Seward by the river ![]() Also I was on the Luce Line trail the other day and I think it passes pretty close to Gear west, it follows 12 anyways: http://www.luceline.com/graphics/lucemap.pdf. It becomes crushed limestone fairly early on but my tri bike handled it fine. It's kind of a pain to find the trail since the trailhead by Wirth Park hasn't opened yet, but here's a map: http://www.co.hennepin.mn.us/images/HCInternet/EPandT/Transportation/Bikeways%20and%20Trails/Bicycle%20Maps/2009_Bike_Map_SE_web.pdf If you take wirth parkway left on glenwood left on harold right on winnetka and cross 55 the Luce line will be a few blocks past the mall. Once you get to long lake you're on your own ![]() BikerGrrrl - 2009-07-01 2:48 PM Oh - new and better idea. How about a co-op owned and run by cool local triathletes, of which we know a few... Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I buy so much stuff at REI. Its close to embarassing how much I spend there. (one of my other hobbies is hiking and camping). Their triathlon clothing selection is small. The one pair of tri shorts I have I got from REIoutlet.com They are ok, but their is a seam right down the middle of the shorts which is really unflattering (any women out there know what I'm talking about?) |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I heart REI, and I too spend an embarrasing amount of $$ there annually. But their tri selection (even online) is pretty sad - almost all just entry-level, low-end Zoot stuff. njk123 - that's a bummer to hear about RnF - I'm not any kind of "RnF or die!" hardcore bubba, but I've been fortunate to have good experiences the few times I've been in for shoes. I'd just be curious to see what they have for tri clothes next time I go in. It's gotta be better than REI. Heck, almost anything would be better than REI's selection... I'll also have to check out that WBL store sometime - their website looks like they keep a nice stock of stuff. Cheers, Chris |

I have to remember to get everything I need for next week's race tonight, because I don't know if I'll be back here again next week.

I love having Gear West in such close proximity and wouldn't change a thing...... I'm definitely grateful to have Gear West in the area - they've been super helpful & accommodating getting my bike dialed in, and are always generous with good advice and patient answers to my dumb-new-guy equipment questions. They'll continue to get my business: I just selfishly wish they were closer ![]() Cheers, Chris |

![]() I'm an hour and a half from Gear West and that's close enough for me. I think it's been 2 or 3 years since I've been there. Someone please fill me in on what it is that only they carry that I must have. It is fun to stop in there and look around, but I certainly don't feel the need to do that very often. |

Hi Joe, I come from a running & mountain biking background, so getting appropriate equipment that's right for me, etc is something I know is critical. I consider myself a very competent bike wrench, but getting my new tri bike set up and learning about tri-specific gear (bike and otherwise) is a new world to me. This tri stuff is expensive ![]() ![]() Cheers, Chris |

![]() Don't get me wrong, I think Gear West in great. I also can understand the need to visit there when transitioning into this sport. But once I had my gear, I really didn't have much reason to go there. Maybe if I were more of a tech junky or gadget junky it would be different, but I just don't even know what I would possibly need there. |

With time and experience, my dependence on local shops will inevitably decrease, but it's nice to have a go-to "relationship" with a local shop as I'm getting my feet under me here. |
