Mine completely locked up on the last long ride before my IM as well. It will turn on to the Garmin screen but then it just sits there. You have to hold mode+lap to turn it back off as the power button doesn't work. I was also seeing lousy bat life (3-4 hours sometimes). I've reflashed it with the latest firmware but it's screwed.

Also out of warranty by a few months, so no love from Garmin support. 80+ bucks or just get a 310XT - I semi joke that the last firmware patch had a timebomb to blow it up after 310 release.

I toyed with the idea of getting one of the new 310XTs, but the few advantages didn't make it worth the price tag for me. I liked the fact that it is waterproof, but when I found that the HRM and the GPS did not work in the water I figured it wasn't much more than a timer for swimming. I've got a watch that will do that. Maybe I'll change my mind when the price comes down a bit and my 305 dies again.

I wouldn't toss a working 305 for the 310, but if the 305 is going to be 100 to fix, and the 310 has enough bat power to get through the longest events rather than using a AA portable pack that's a good incentive for me. Plus you can still keep the 310 in your cap instead of the wrist for the swim to get full GPS tracking. I did that with the 305 but since it's not the same waterproof level I also had to use ziplocks.

My 305 is DEAD! Grrr... I just got back into training again. The 305 has been in a box for 2yrs. I pulled it out yesterday and plugged it in and it booted right up! Hot Dog! The HRM strap couldn't work at all even with a new battery so I ordered a new strap and quick release kit yesterday as well. I then went ahead and updated all the software from the Garmin website. I left the 305 in the dock to charge overnight.

Today, after shopping, I retrieve my 305 as I am about to go out the door for a run. DEAD! Won't even turn on! Grrr...

See above posts on the two halves of the 305 ungluing.

An even easier way to fix this (I've since found) is to electrical tape the two halves together along the lower portion - works great and no gluing. Looks a bit ghetto - in a cool way!

I've had mine die just randomly a few times. If I let it go and come back to it in a few hours or the next day, it works just fine again. No idea why...I think it has something to do with the battery dying and how I have it plugged into the computer to charge, but all I really care about is that it works again! Anyway, don't give up hope yet! Check back and it might still work!

Contact Garmin, they are extremely good about backing their product.  I had one that did the same thing and was about two years old.  They sent me a brand new one (as I shipped them my old one) the week of one of my races.  I have also had a worn out cradle before where it had worne out the contacts on the cradle, they shipped me a new cradle.  I can't be happier with their service.

Hooray!

That's exactly what mine has done, probably 3 or 4 times in the 2 years I've had it. It's always come back, so I've never worried about it enough to call Garmin. I really think it's a quirk with it when the battery dies...
