Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() randym95 - 2009-07-06 11:00 AM Believe it or not, my success in losing weight over the last year (42 pounds) has been a source of contention for me. I'm 5'10" and have gone from 217 to 175 in one year. I'm pretty much the only one in our group of friends that has adopted a healthier lifestyle. Now, I'm the one being made fun of because I don't eat crap all the time, like they do. When I actually eat a dessert after a meal, watch out cuz here come the remarks. Unfortunately, these hecklers also include my wife. It's irritating. We just had a huge discussion on this in my mixed martial arts forum about this very thing. The reality is, you are a living contradiction of their lame-ash excuses. I dealt with at a work site once. People would almost yell at me for passing on the dough-nuts being passed around! Of course one of them ended up getting stomach stapling surgery (on our dime - military wife). She announced that, "nothing she tried works" while eating a doughnut. It was Boston creme, SHE WAS SAYING THAT IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE FOR HER TO LOSE WEIGHT ANY OTHER WAY WITH CUSTARD ON HER CHIN AND CHEWED DOUGHNUT IN HER TEETH! Can you imagine the backlash if I talked to them like they talked to me about their habits? Edited by eabeam 2009-07-06 6:48 PM |

I, as well as many others here, know just how hard it is to get in shape the old fashioned way. Getting started is the most difficult step and then keeping at it when things slow down, follows as a close second. Regardless, after all the sweat and pain it took, I will N-E-V-E-R go back to my old lifestyle. Randy |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't have a tri physique (or much of any physique, yet) but I still get those funny comments. It boggles my mind! From my lazy friends that I don't see very often, I get "OMG you are so tiny!" Really now? I wear a freaking size 8, I'm no where near tiny. Following the donut comment, one of these said friends did the same thing while she was plowing down some serious food. My mother questions if I'm eating enough. She actually accused me of an eating disorder. My BMI is still considered overweight.. But I have a eating disorder???? Mind you, this is the same person who accused me of trying to turn her into a vegetarian because I suggested not eating as much meat. I wonder what kind of comments I'll get when I can up my training again. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() this week my neighbor told me i was built like a brick sh!thouse. wasn't quite sure how to take that, being a somewhat smaller woman. i think he was trying to compliment me? strangers have come up to me in parking lots and ask me if i'm a runner and tell me my legs look like a runner's legs. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In the wake of the 4th of July weekend out at the lake there were many opportunities for people to throw out their comments on my body shape and fitness level. The most encouraging thing/compliment was from the multiple people who were interested in my exercise regiment and what kind of training I endure during a given week. Could it be possible I inspired someone to take on the the ways of the triathlete or motivate them to get in shape? One can only hope. |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() After a recent extensive physical 2 doctors independently said "Perfect!". The cardiologist was ecstatic to tell me my heart had shrunk (apparently a good thing). Some of my results are now being used to demonstrate what is achievable. Yea me! My sincere gratitude for the advice, encouragement & inspiration from fellow BT'ers. As many here have suggested, you really don't get the support you'd expect and hope for from people not involved in this. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't have a Tri physique but I am working on getting a physique in general. I lost 65 lbs in about 9 months so I get a lot of comments about looking good or skinny. I'm 5'10" 197 so I'm not skinny. For the most part because of loosing the weight I get complements and a few "you inspire me" statements. I have 3 friends who are thinking about doing Tri's in the future now. They want to try a 5k first and work there way up. As for my physique I get statements on my legs since they are bigger then the average person but the one comment that sticks out that I don't know if I should take as a compliment or a insult was I had a aunt ask if I was "on the steroids" lol trust me I don’t have the physique for a person on roids but from being a fat guy to where I am now I have made progress and still working on my self |

Unfortunately, these hecklers also include my wife. It's irritating. I get that to a small extent as well. I went from 255 down to the 175 range. Most of the comments I get from people are positive and people that have known me for a long time remember the athlete I was years ago. I initially got tips on exercise, diet, etc. but people for the most part aren't willing to do it. For the life of me I couldn't get why my wife was so unsupportive, so we have had a few sit downs to discuss it. Turns out there were some issues that we discussed and have put here at ease. She still gives me crap when we are out and I want to eat at Subway, but it is light hearted and OK by me. eabeam - 2009-07-06 7:47 PMOf course one of them ended up getting stomach stapling surgery (on our dime - military wife). That's hillarious and reminds of a few people and one couple in specific. I have had to bite my tongue many a time. Lots of people want results but most aren't prepared to do what it takes in addition to seemingly not having a clue. |

I wonder if that is a specific line in the defense budget. Many civilian health insurance plans pay for bariatric surgery when it is medically necesary. Why should a soldier's family member's coverage be any different? It should be better in fact. in my opinion. Not saying you're statement was unpatriotic or anything. But if a notoriously stingy industry like the health-insurers will pay for that when it's medically required, it seems like the government shouyld do the same for or soldiers. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am not against it, I think military insurers and private insurers should probably have better checks and balances for how they define "I tried everything already." In reality, it is probably more cost effective in the long run given her age and weight loss. I was more pointing out the irony of situation overall. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah probably so... I know from talking to a few patients the screening process is fairly strict but I'm not sure about how the coverage requirements varies. Sorry for the hijack. |
