Subject: Heat & Humidity vs. Duration & IntensityHow much impact does heat/humidity really have? If you've got a choice, is training in the hottest part of the day good or bad? I'm building for IM-Lou, and have been trying to perform my key workouts for the week during the hottest time of the day. The last few weeks temps here in Houston have been in the upper 90's, with fairly high humidity levels. I rode a little less than 90-miles on Friday, and ran 13.5 on Sunday. Before I left home for the run, I was planning on doing 15 or 16, but it was a sunny 100-degrees out, and was all I could do to stagger home at 13.5. On long runs, I usually drink either 4 or 8 oz per mile, depending on how far I am from locations I can refill my bottles. I don't think I can process much more fluid than this. My pacing is done off of HR. I've been trying to schedule my long runs & rides in late morning / early afternoon, thinking that I'll aclimate to the heat of the day and suffer less at Louisville. Does this make any sense or do you think it's counterproductive? Am I better off shifting my long runs / rides to early mornings (usually about 15-degrees cooler but typically very humid ) or sticking with the heat? I guess my real question is about wheter the stress from running/riding in the heat is more beneficial than the extra stress that going further / faster places on the body? |
