Being a natural athelte in good shape is miles away from being a triathlete.  This is a WHOLE other world.  And in this world, I am SLOW.  Wow.

I am a lifelong athelte who has always considered herself fit.  I work and socialize with mostly sedentary people, so to them I am super fit.  Sports come naturally to me.  I was a personal trainer in grad school.  20+ years of martial arts, weight training, various cardio acitivities, tennis, biking, serious swimming as a youth.  I thought moving into triathlons would be a great challenge, but that I'd adapt quickly.  It never occured to me I'd have to worry about getting across the finish line in my first race - I was actually thinking I could be MOP.

Boy, was I wrong!!

I've been training for about 8 weeks now, granted with a serious bike crash and a vacation thrown in, and I am slow, slow, slow.  This is HARD!  Hard to get all the training in, hard to get the workouts finished, hard to balance nutrition, hard to improve.  I realize patience is required and how!  It is humbling in the extreme, which is probably a great thing in and of itself.  Even for a seriously fit person, starting a tri regime is one of the toughest things I've done physically.

All this is to say - my hat is off to all of you.  I have enormous respect for everyone who does this or is taking this on.   And also to say thanks for the great information and advice on this board.  What a wonderful resource!

Sarah

6 weeks is nothing. You will improve dramatically over time. Just stay with it!

Sarah... hang in there!

Honestly, it took me a good 4 years to see any kind of "WOW, I'm actually not that bad!" kind of performance. Then again, I'm a slow learner... at least my body is.

And hey, you have history with swimming on your side! That's the part that most triathletes struggle with.

Keep training. It will get better. Your body can take on more and more of a workload year after year.

Sarah...I agree!

It is hard.  And it is humbling.  And there's something sweet about that.

You have only just begun!! Keep on training and the rest of it will click, and you'll improve, and this time next year you'll be one of the poster's saying "wow, look what can happen in a year!"  Just stick with it and stick with BT!! This IS a great resource with some truly great people that constantly inspire the rest of us to do more and go harder!

Triathlon is a little like golf in that no matter how good you are, you can still find weaknesses and work to get better.

One of the nicer things about this sport and community is I can step up to the start line next to some world-class athletes.  (One of our local triathletes has won her age-group at the Xterra Off-Road World Championships.

I was in a similar spot about three years ago.  Always pretty athletic.  AND I came from a collegiate running background too!  But my first tri I was well over the 50th percentile mark.  I was actually (foolishly) surprised.  Granted I was on a sub par bike.  But, three years later I've gotten much better and got on a better set of wheels.  I'm now starting to break into the top 10% in my races and consistently getting better.

Keep it up!  As most would tell you here, its worth the work. Cool

You're right, usually around the half way point, I always wish I'd rented a cart.

Anyhow, back to the OP.
I used to be a college football lineman, and in that world doing 1 mile in ~7 minutes was nearly a record.  2 miles was just laughable, and endurance meant you could out drink most people at the bar.

Now I'm still trying to lose my lineman weight over 10 years later.  The 2 things that stand out most for me now are that running is really enjoyable (how did that happen) and that the only people that want you to do better than you personally, are the other people you're racing with.  Sure you're competing against them, but really, you compete against yourself and then compare it to other people.  It's more like a family get together, where bragging rights are important, but only because of the camaraderie.
