Total Time = 1h 05m 26s
Overall Rank = 4/380
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 1/24
Pre-race routine:

So luckily I did not have to work Friday night. I left the gym at 9 and was asleep by 10:30. Got up at 2:30, took a shower and was on the road to Denver by 3:30. I had to make a detour along the way to pick up my daughter. Nico was at my first triathlon in 2005 but since then has moved to the East Coast and lived in China for 2 years as well. Needless to say I wanted to race well so that she could see for herself just how much I improved from those early races. So exciting!
Event warmup:

None. plenty of time to warm up on the swim.
Swim
  • 17m 41s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started out in the front of my wave. I knew I would get dropped but figured that I would glide in the current created by the mass of bodies. I had a hard time seeing the first buoy because the sun was blinding me so I just sighted off the other swimmers. At a certain point I stopped and looked for the first buoy and saw that I was right on course and put my head down and just tried to groove. I rounded the second buoy a little wide but could see the beach in the distance and just swam in comfortably. I got out of the water and Nico told me that I was like in 18th place in my age group. I was actually 8th, but it gave me a sense of urgency to get haulin' on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much... I really need to improve, but I don't have the will.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

I had the fastest transition in my age group, but I think I should have been faster.
Bike
  • 30m 49s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 26.62 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode the course pretty well today. I kept wondering wear all of the 40-44 year old guys were because Nico said I was in 18th place in my AG out of the water. I was getting discouraged because I wasn't catching enough of them... I just rode as hard as I could. Near the turnaround I say Drew who was having a great day and set my sights on catching him. It took a while but with about a mile or two to go I finally caught him.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I had the fastest bike in my AG and 2nd fastest overall. I would have liked to have had the fastest ride since it was only a few seconds that separated me from having the fastest bike split.
Transition 2
  • 00m 29s
Comments:

I had a great trans two even though I over shot my bike and had to run back. fastest in age group and 2nd fastest overall
What would you do differently?:

focus on my bike...
Run
  • 15m 24s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 04m 57s  min/mile
Comments:

Yes, the course was obviously short. According to most peoples Garmins it was anywhere between 2.68 and 2.8 miles so I averaged it out to 2.75 and a 5:36 pace which is very good. I've been running well this year and it continued today.
What would you do differently?:

Well my Garmin was supposed to be in Multi-mode, but it didn't work so I didn't have any data to pace myself off. I just ran as hard as I could and maybe that is the way to go.
Post race
Warm down:

Beers, Awards

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim

Event comments:

The bike course was dangerous. Cars and not clearly marked turns and inattentive volunteers made the bike difficult, plus Cherry Creek really needs to fix all of the bone rattling cracks in the pavement.

Great job on your 4th OA! Once we get that swim fixed you'll be like unbeatable. How exactly do they mess up the distance on an out-and-back 5k???? They had to do it on purpose which IMO is annoying. And of course you realize that you got gypped again by this race. Last year= crazy long swim. This year= crazy short run.

Smoking fast time Dime...great job!  That's cool that your daughter was in town to watch you.  I agree about the roads at CC Rez...they've been in need of repair for years!

Yep! I'm glad that you noticed that the Tri-Gods have it out for me : ) long swims, short runs. C'est la vie, we will just have to fix the swim and eliminate the handicap.

Nice job!  I was the tall blond guy in the same row of bikes as you, I believe.  My garmin said the run was 2.6 (and the bike was only 12.53).    I agree about that road cracks.  I test rode it on Thursday and was actually thinking about riding my mountain bike for the race.
