Overall Rank = 357/465
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 10/14
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:30. Had oatmeal for breakfast. Got equipment into truk and headed out. Picked up a green tea at local coffee shop. About 30 minute drive to the race site. Located parking about a 1/2 K from the transition area. Unloaded and walked to transition. Checked in and got body marking done. It was cold and didn't realy want to take off my juscke tto get marked oon shoulder.
Event warmup:

Wlaked around the transiton ans set up area to familiarize myeslf with locaations. Went down to the swim area to see what it was like coming out of the water. Very cool with the winf blowing across the lake. What the heck was going on it was supposed to be 22 and sunny today and her we have cluds cold and looking like rain. Got into the wet suit finally and headed to the lake. I figured it woudl be freaking cold getting into the water but it was actually nice. Went for a quick wamr up swim and got a foot cramp. Had to struggle back to shore and work out the cramp. OK by race time. I was in the 5th wave so we had to basically get out of the water and stand in the cold wind waiting for my turn to start.
Swim
  • 21m 45s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Tried a different start... at the front of the pack with a quick jump and 10 hard fast strokes. Was a good jump but I felt very poor for the next 300 or so meters and probably lost any advantage I might have had. The balance of the swim was good with a nice easy rythym. I found in the wetsuit I wasn't able to reach as far forward as without and would like to have been able to glide a little further with each stroke.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice my speed more. To develop getting into a rythym more quickly. Probably need to get back into the pool or lake more often. Train more with a wet suit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

no problem with the transition except for falling over getting my wet suit off. Decided I might as well stay on my butt and finish getting changed. We had a longish run to the transition zone out of the water and there was some pretty big holes we had to watch for. Had two tri shirts on coming out of the water and put on my bike jersey on top.
What would you do differently?:

nothing really
Bike

Comments:

Very cool on the bike at first. Got up to speed quickly and into a good rythym. Today I decided I would keep my cadence high so was doing a lot of gear changing going up and down the hills. On the way out we had a tailwind so I was in my two top gears most of ths way. I only geared down for a couple of larger hills. The turnaroudn put us dead into stiff headwind. Not a very nice ride coming back. Hit some very light misty type rain n the way back also.
What would you do differently?:

I still need to work on my hills. The flats seem to be coming along nicely but I do need more distance rides.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

I was riding on top of the pedals coming into the dismount and after I swung my leg over the one still on the pedal slipped off and I almost went down but didn't. Ran into transitojn with the bike quickly racked change shoes and was out on the run course.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing transiton was OK.
Run
  • 41m 11s
  • 7 kms
  • 05m 53s  min/km
Comments:

Had a good run going utnil about the 6K mark. Came out of transiton with a good cadence and short stride. Took most of the first kilometer to get loosend up and comfortable. After that I was feeling very good with the run. Nice, loose and easy stride. At the 6 K mark I was just going to kick up the pace for the last 1K when I got a shooting pain on the outside of my right knee. It was painful enough that I had to stop for a minnute. I started back up again and it immediately shot the pain into my kn=ee agina. SLowed to a very painfull hobble. I don't know what it was but after about 200 m or so I was able to start running agina and finished with a good kick over taking a couple of people who had passed me before.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Maybe put in more miles in training. Work in more speed drills. For this race I don't think I would have done much different ewxcpet t =o stretch out my stride a little more.
Post race
Warm down:

Water and talked to another competitor. Cheered on some of the other triathletes coming in. Walked aroud a bit, gathered up stuff and headed out for the hike to the truck.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

More and harder training. Hard to get the training in with all the travelling.

Event comments:

Well run race as is all of the Subaru races. The only real down side was the exit from the swim which was a bit treacheous due to the holes in the running area. Grass cover so they were a bit hard to see.
OVer all I was satified with my race today.

1000m swim and 7K run - those are the longest sprint distances I've seen. Great job out there.  Keep up the good work and you'll kill that HIM!

You had a great race too Rob, with very little training I might add!   I think the real reason you couldn't catch me on the run was because I had an 8 minute head start.     My triathlon running is still very slow this year - have to figure out how to change that.

Have a great week.
