Subject: Rewards

We all know that rewarding ourselves for any reason -- and especially for a good workout month (or day or segment) is a good thing. And it can be quite motivating to work for something nice. But I run out of reward ideas and thought it might be fun to collect othere' ideas.

I'll start with a few of the old standbys:

new running shoes, new clothing article, a massage

Please add your favorite reward.

As I was reading this, I was rewarding myself with a big bowl of Ice cream. I had an awsome run today, and an ok swim.

I've gotten into Lent this year and have given up wine and television. With training it feels like my life is pretty pared down to essentials, and I've struggled with finding relaxing, rewarding things to do. I'm in danger of turning into something of a prig. I make an effort to have a really good dinner with dessert on Sundays. I have a pass to a very nice health club that I'm saving for Easter week. Maybe I'll buy some Jane Austen movies on DVD.

If I've not missed a workout durning the week and stuck to my heathly eating plan for the week, I get to go to this hamburger joint.  Jack, correct me if I'm wrong.  I go to Big Jud's Burgers and get a bacon burger with fries, the best burger in town!  Idaho potatoes make the best fries, and I use fry sauce too.

Nancy, I'm going with the material goods...new cycling jersey, new ironman watch, etc. I can't seem to break my focus for my upcoming events this summer and go off my healthy nutrition schedule and use that as a reward. It feels too much like back-sliding, so I tend to keep it to something that won't put pounds back on!

small reward: a nice glass (or three) of wine and hand rolling some fresh linguini.
big reward: plane ticket to somewhere new for a race then sightsee afterwards.

I'm with you Nancy and Max, my rewards cannot be food. I need a new tri suit, pedals and a saddle for my other bike, and I'm sure I could think of a thousand other things that would qualify as a reward. A massage would be high on my list as well. 2 hours deep tissue......aaahhhhhhh.

My reward was a new Cateye Astrale cyclometer for my bike that I got last week.
Now I can get cadence and don't have to count my RPM's manually on indoor rides on my trainer.
The fact that I got it for a "steal" at $19.99 made it just that more sweet!

I was down island (5 hr drive from home) last thursday and went to "The Body Shop" (skin care stuff extrordinaire) with a gift certificate I've been holding since Christmas!!! Got 2 new body butters - blueberry and Shea. I've already got the papaya. After a really hot soak, this stuff is too much heaven on your skin. Yum.

Massage wins hands down for me. Especially a 'hot stone' massage.

I got my first one as a b-day present from my SO at the time a few years ago. Oh my, I nearly drove off the road on the way home I was so relaxed after.

That being said, another way I spoil myself is a nice dinner out somewhere. Steak is good for protein right? And red wine is good for your heart too? :D

I'm a gadget geek ( seeing as I work with computers, this kinda figures ), so I end up with new bike comps, and HRMs, and such regularly anyway.

Rewards....Hmmmmmm!I've been so busy training that I haven't really thought of rewarding myself. I'm a bit of a machoist so I always have to be reminded that it's ok to relax and cool out. But after 21 workouts a week for the last five weeks, I'm thinking I deserve a huge reward. So I'm taking my battered body and driving down near Taos, N.M. for a weekend of Hot Springs, body wraps and massages, good wine and better dinners! Now if only I could find a cute guy to go with! That would be a true reward!

I've spent too many years rewarding myself for marginal achievments. Now I've reaped the "benefits" with a fat belly and pathetic endurance level. So, my rewards for hard work and weight loss will be the benefits I achieve from doing well at them.

and maybe the occasional ice cream :P

I've cut out the small rewards

If I make it to my main goal in July (1500meter steady swim, 15 mile run and 50 mile ride), I'm getting myself a brand new shiny Cervelo P2K and a slot in IMUSA!

I have a mountain bike to do the sprints with this year.
I have the option to borrow a really nice one from a friend and put slicks on it.

However if I drop to below 200 pounds then I may treat myself to an entry level road bike. That pack of M&M’s I just ate won’t help!!

since I have been focusing my training so far this year to losing weight and body fat (from 212 and 18.5 % to 192 and 15 % in 11 weeks, I'm with those others who will take something other than food as a reward, even though I do indulge in small food rewards throughout the week. this idea of a reward is a new thought, so I'll hope for some input from veteran triathletes as to what gadget or training tool might be the most useful or exciting for use by a novice. then I'll get that.

I still abuse food too much as a constaint reward, so I am not celebrating the minor victories. My big celebration will begin pool side as I await the start of my first race. I know the race is all I need to stay focused. My wife will give me the silent treatment if I spent all this money this year to race and give up on the training. She quietly supports me but will not tolerate another dime spent if I stop training.

My first reward was a new watch for loosing 100 #, it is a fossil.for two hundred pounds I got a heart rate monitor, and tri shorts. Last week I had a hot fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, but I dont do it very often.

I haven't thought about a reward for my first Tri this Sat morning. I am wanting a new bike, as mine is a 1971 model, but it is a very good one, only parts are nearly immpossible to find.
