I'm back in for this month and hope things go better then last month.  I am hopeful since I won't have 8 days vacation and a weekend of wedding festivities to throw off my training and diet.  I am starting this month at 204, but that was before the wedding so I hope things go well at weight in this week.  Goal for Aug is a pound a week or 200.

Lori - No, I haven't been counting calories but keeping an eye on portions for the protein (palm size) but not really restricting the veggies as I usually count on them to fill me up when I am still hungry.  I guess I will have to start counting the calories and writing down everything I eat to see if I'm not overdoing it on something.

Current Weight: 186
Goal Weight: 182

I am only 11 pounds from my original goal of 175 and still going.  104 lbs gone forever.  Just finished my first sprint this last weekend and it was awesome!  We were rushed off the property after I finished so I did not have time to properly stretch and now my calf's are very angry with me.  I don't care though crossing that finish line was an incredible feeling and I am happy I was able to get there.

Looking at another Tri in Indy in 2 weeks.  Open water swim through a Canal that winds through a park.  With a nice flat bike and run course.  I am going to call today to see if they still have spots open.

Lets go team skinny!!!  WOO HOO!!!

is it obvious I am a little excited...

Hey, Skinnies!

Welcome new Skinnies & congrats on the great losses.

For the new faces, I've been a member of Skinnies for a while, but I've been a big slacker lately (and unfortunately, getting bigger!)...

I started in 2006 at 200+ pounds, reached my low of 142 last summer, spent a year putting my goal at 140, and now due to a lousy and lazy summer, I am somewhere around 155 (at least I hope it's not more...we'll find out on Wednesday).

My goal for August is to get back to sub-Athena (149.9).

I log my food and I'm trying to do a modified-Paleo diet for a while to see if that can shake me up a bit. Of course, I'm going on vacation starting Wednesday, so that makes things a little more challenging.

Mindy & Mett - re calculating your calorie allowance:  ]Here's what I've learned from reading and listening to Jillian Michaels - I will try to be as accurate as I can:

Women should never go below 1,200 calories per day, and men should never go below 1,500. How many calories you need each day depends upon whether you need to lose vanity pounds (10-15 pounds or so), or whether you have more to lose.

When you have just those last few pounds to lose, your body is happy and healthy at that weight, and if you cut your calories too dramatically your body will slow down your metabolism to compensate. Instead, set your calorie allowance at your basal metabolic rate (BMR) (Google "BMR calculator"). Then use your daily activity and workouts to burn the calories for weight loss.

If you have more to lose, you can cut your calories more dramatically (exercise will help to maintain your metabolism). To figure out how many calories you need a day to maintain your current weight:
1. Calculate your resting BMR
2. Multiply that number by 1.1 if you are sedentary most of the day (desk worker/sitting most of the day)
Multiply by 1.2 if you are lightly active (walking around half the day or more)
Multiply by 1.3 if you are moderately active (walking around all day, e.g., gardener or carpenter)
Multiply by 1.4 if you are constantly moving/manual labor (construction worker, mover)
3. Add the number of calories you expect to expend working out.
The sum is the number of calories you need to maintain your weight.
To lose 1 pound per week, subtract 500 calories per day (1 lb=3,500 calories). To lose 2 pounds per week, subtract 1,000 calories per day.

Alternatively, you can wear a heart rate monitor all day and see how many calories you burn.

Once you've determined your calorie allowance, you can also use "calorie cycling" to help maintain your metabolism (the idea is that by varying your calories each day, your body can't "adjust" to the lower number. Basically, you vary your calories from day to day, but end up with a week-long average at your desired calorie allowance. So if you want your average calories to be 1,600 per day, you may eat: 1,600, 1,400, 1,600, 1,400, 1,600, 2,000, 1,600.

Hope that helps!

ah, here's where you're all hiding.  Weighed in this morning and same as last week.  Howdy all the newbies - I've lost about 25lbs, now 134.2 - been down a bit more than that but a long holiday in the UK was my undoing, just a short chick so ultimate goal is 120.  So goal for month is to lose 4lbs and get back into that grey silk dress that at the moment is straining across my behind.

Morning Skinnies! 199.2lbs this morning. Not a great week (199.8 last week). I am sure this is due to my cockiness last week, after managing to lose almost 2lbs the week before WHILE ON VACATION.....I started to feel like I couldn't not lose weight. Back to reality now. Though, I can't help but wonder if the extra running I did on vacation was really what helped. I would have thought all of the crap I ate and beer I drank would have outweighed a couple extra miles on the treadmill???? Oh well, looking back, I have had a few spots where I would sort of plateau for about a week, so this could also be just another one of those periods.

Good Morning. I just got off the scale - I am 179.8 - Down a couple from last week, most of it though I think is water weight due to a lower sodium consumption (eating much healthier). Good luck.

Wow! Thanks for the info! I've been going nuts trying to figure out how many calories I should be consuming a day. Because of my size and weight I figured the National average was a good place to start. It wasn't bad, but somehow I felt I could go a couple hundred lower to around 1800 to 1850. Yesterday was the first day at 1850 and I didn't feel like I was starving to death. Especially after the 3 mile bike ride and water areobics. In fact woke up feeling pretty darn good. I've even started cataloging calories of the food I eat.

Weigh in was worse than I thought. I thought I was at 300 but alas, I'm at 310. Oh well, at least it's a nice round number.Tongue out The great thing is that I don't feel discouraged. I actually feel optimistic about where I'm at right now. It's the pieces of gold that I find like this that keep me moving forward. Thanks!

Be careful of the calorie count on food labels - from what I understand federal regulations punish companies that overestimate the caloric value of a serving, therefore most compaies underestimate the actual calories (ie. to be safe they err by claiming there are fewer calories in a serving than there really are).

I haven't weighed in in a while due to summer travel and such.  As you can guess, summer travel has not been kind to my weight.  I tried to eat healthy, but just the basic concept of eating out and healthy don't co-exist.  So, here I am at 148.5 this morning.

I have a long term goal set, I just have to get there.  I will need to set some short term goals, though.  Hubby and I are going to Hawaii next June and I want to be able to wear a bikini without embarrassing him or me.  I am also running again, if you want to call 12 mm running.  There is a half marathon while we are there and I would like to run in it.  I have imported a training plan and am doing AB crunches.  I would love to weigh around 118 max and 115 min when we leave.

Start - 171 (on Sunday)

Today - 171

But, just started, so 2 days of workouts and better eating, so didn't think the dial would move this week.  Hope to see some loss next week.

I had quite the shock last night when I weighed in at the gym.  I didn't feel like I did very well with my eating.  Plus my wife is out of town so I have been eating the leftover lasagne for dinner since Sunday and I know that's high in calories.  I also had a wedding last weekend so all I was hoping for was to not gain.  I weighed in and the scale showed 200.0 down from 204.  I blinked, stepped off and tried again.  This time it came up 199.8.  I don't know if the scales were knocked out or what but I hope its accurate.  I should have checked it on a second set of scales they have but I didn't think about it at the time.  I was too excited about losing 4 lbs.  The one thing I did do this last week was consistantly watch my calorie intake and cut out most of the snacks.  I will try to head over to the gym tonight and check on the other scales just to make sure this is accurate.

Start (May 09) - 210
Ultimate goal   - 185

This month
Start                - 204
week 1            - 200
goal                 - 200
I may be updating my goal for the month if things check out OK tonight.
