Subject: How long to BP meds take to kick in???
sort of a general question, working with my GP to bring down my BP.   about 9 days ago started 5 mg lisinopril, about 4 days ago bumped it to 10.  The bottom number (diastolic?) has pegged at about 80.  But the upper is still high, routinely 130 in the am and 140 in the pm.

I'm anxious to get settled as I am holding off on starting to run again until i have a good number.  How long does it take?  I understand 10 may be too little, but I would think it would have some effect, and it just hasn't

On a similar note, do some bp meds work better for some people, or is it just the side effects that cause people to change?  I've read that lisinopril is fairly good for training purposes, so I want to take one that meets training goals.

thanks for any advice

That should be enough time to see improvement.

and yes, some meds work better for some people.  Still lots of room to up your dose and it doesn't seem you have that far to go.  good luck.

Those are pretty low doses of lisinopril.  You should be happy with those numbers right now.  I agree that they can still be tweaked a little, and the meds may need some adjusting, but it takes some time to find the right course.  Also, you can run with a BP of 130/80.  That is safe.  The exercise will also help your BP readings.  You will get a post exercise reduction in BP up to 24 hours after exercise.  Finally, make sure your doc is checking your kidney function while adjusting your lisinopril.   I have seen some big jumps in creatinine with starting lisinopril or increasing the dose.

Thanks for the info.  I am a bit sensitive to the issue since I am on anticoagulants and I have been advised about the dangers of HBP and hemohhragic (sp) bleed.  I was told that if my BP was normal, however controlled, increases due to exercise are not much to worry about.  I would just like to "start" as low as I can

I take 20 mg of lisinopril.   I'm not sure how long it takes for it to start working, but I started out at a lower dose (can't remember what I was started at) and went back every 2-3 months until my readings were in the normal range.  I continued strenuous exercise the entire time since my doctor said it was OK.  I do not have any side effects from it and it doesn't seem to have an impact on my training.  I've probably been on it for about a year now.

Thanks, looks like I may be  on 20 as well soon.  I just wasn't sure what was "normal."  I have a home machine and test am/pm.  And I've resisted going on meds for a looong time, finally gave in.  Sucks but thanks mom and dad
