Subject: Garmin Foot pod
I was on the Garmin website and noticed two different foot pods for the 305, anyone know if there is a difference outside of the price?

One is much smaller, there is a new one that comes as an optional package on the FR60. That is the smaller one.

Old one uses a AAA battery, and you have to manually turn it on or off.  You don't want this one.

New one uses a 2032(?) watch battery, and autodetects when you're moving.  Much better.

You run a measured course, and then adjust your watch accordingly.  It's not too hard, but the book could be a little clearer.  I have an FR50 and a 305.  Once we calibrated the FR50 for my wife, it's within  about a tenth of a mile over 4-5 miles as compared to the 305.  Not too bad.

Also, with both of my foot pods (with the CR 2032 battery/auto on)   - both times on receiving them in the mail, both were dead shortly after arrival.  Must be due to all the jiggling during shipping.  I would plan on replacing the battery shortly after getting it, and keeping several spares in your bag.  Once you replace the battery, seems to last pretty long tho.

i have the garmin 50 w/pod....after calibration its within .1 of mile on a 3 mile distance.  i think that is pretty sufficient.

i am very happy with the watch and bought the garmin 50 / foot pod / HRM for $69.99 on amazon brand new.  they are about $80 with all this stuff.  its a fantastic watch, personally love it.

i have the bigger foot pod it fits on my shoe top, after the first 1-2 runs you won't even notice it.  my bateries were dead. 

after it senses movement it activates for 30 min then turns off....

not really true about the batteries.  The bigger one (the one for $119.99 on the site) uses the watch battery, has the auto-off.  The newer is smaller and can be fit into certain shoes on the inside (not sure which shoes, maybe nike+?).  I have no experience with the smaller one, so not sure of its feature set.  I've never seen mention of it tracking cadence, so that could be a difference.  The bigger one is still pretty small, you won't notice it on your shoe, and once calibrated it's just as accurate as the 305 or 405.

Hrm my stride length changes with how fast I'm going so I assumed that it was measuring stride length then figuring out the distance that way. I don't get how else it could work?

Actually they have an accelerometer in them and the integrate this to get distance. They're typically quoted as being 95% accurate without calibration, 99% with. Not sure if I actually believe these numbers, but people do generally have success with them.

I think it probably actually uses a variety of difference techniques to make an educated guess at your speed. 

But I just learned that it does measure run cadence in addition to speed, and that's pretty awesome.

I just ordered a Garmin 50 with footpod, and can't wait to get reports on my run cadence.
