From what I have gleaned in my short year of triathlon, Long Course refers to 140.6.  Short Course is another name for International.  Does 70.3 have another nickname besides 1/2 Iron?  I hate the thought of doing 1/2 of anything.

i have usually heard of sprint and olympics being "short course" and the half iron and full iron distances being "long course."

from what our tri club guy says, "short course" refers to olympic distance and shorter, with "long course" being anything over olympic.

for example, in two weeks i'm doing a "long course" that's not quite a half IM.  1 mile swim / 34 mile bike / 10 mile run.

i could be wrong about the terminology, but that's what i've been told.

Yeah there's a gray area there between Oly's and HIM.  SommerSports has a series that's 2k S, 60k B, 15k R .  When they run it with a Sprint it's a Long Course, when with a IM it's a Short Course!

I personally refer it as a long course (47.8), it was a 4:20 race for me.
