Weight has not moved up or down by more than 3 pounds in 3 years. Still holding weight at 205 lbs. and people keep telling me that if I want to knock 30 seconds off my race pace on the run I need to drop 10 pounds or more.
Eat pretty healthy, but do drink lots of gatorage, eat energy bars fairly often and drink lots of coffee. Have thought about trying Hydroxycut since it showed up in Triathlete mag but checked it out a bit and found a recent FDA warning about the potential for liver damage. While I want to realize my potential in this sport, I'm not willing to put my health at risk particularly since I've got a wife and three small kids counting on me to take care of myself. A jump start is tempting, but I'm looking for a long term solution and it has been my experience that old school lifestyle changes are the only ones that really stick.
Stay away from diet supplements. You are correct, they will harm your health. There is no fast easy weight loss method. I lost 100 lbs, and have kept it off for 5 years now. The first 50 came off easy. Each additional 10 lbs was exponentially harder to get off, because my body did not want to let go of it. The last 10 lbs took 6 months of starving myself to get off. Then I gained it back. Fast. I'm cool with that, tho. Sure, I'd like to be a faster runner with 10 lbs less, but my body just doesn't want to be 10 lbs less. And there are lots of bigger chicks that pass me in the run, so I know I can get faster at the weight I am at now.
I have to constantly work at maintaining, by counting calories consumed, and balancing that with calories burned. If I stop doing that, I gain weight back. Fast. It sucks! It's worth the effort tho! Check out my logs...you'll see my daily calorie equation. (scroll down past this weekend...i had some really long workouts that let me eat alot, normally, I do not eat THAT much! ).
I use calories burned + rmr as my weight maintenance level. On my rest days, I do eat a little more than my rmr. But otherwise, this equation just happens to work for me. Most people would add 300 to that number. I just have a wonderfully efficient metabolism. I used to think it was a curse, but now I think it helps me in endurance sports. I have never bonked.
