Overall Rank = 11/178
Age Group = F 35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/23
Pre-race routine:

Ate a scrambled egg and oatmeal at 4:45 am. Set up transition area, mixed and mingled.
Event warmup:

500 meter swim
Swim
  • 06m 43s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

We start out two by two in the lanes. My lane partner and I were the second group to go after a 1 minute break. We swam the same pace the first 50. I let him hit the wall first and proceeded to draft off him until we caught the two swimmers who were ahead of us. We were 4 abreast in one lane. No one would yield. So I did some heavy bumping and flailing to get past them. My lane partner followed me, and we made the turn with me slightly in front. By the time we hit 200 meters, my lane partner was cooked. He dropped back. I thought I felt him get on my feet and was happy to take a turn pulling. Turns out this was another, much faster dude. Tried to get on his feet as he passed, but darn, he was too fast:( Swam the final 150 all alone.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. First pool swim of the year. First short course race of the year. Was very rusty with whole thing. I guess race more short course races!
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Yeah. Um. Well, I had trouble getting my aero helmet on. Kept getting the harness stuck on the ear covers! Then I bumbled around like an idiot for a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions. In a sprint, every second counts!!
Bike
  • 41m 11s
  • 15 miles
  • 21.85 mile/hr
Comments:

This course has never hurt this bad and this is the 4th year that I've done this race. Taking the month off in July and just doing some casual riding really made this hurt a lot. I was determined to race it all in the big ring, but my thighs were erupting in flames and my cadence dropped to a pathetic level and I knew this would be very bad for the run. So I shifted into the little ring to try to spin up the later hills. I had a lot of transmission issues in my little ring. It wouldn't go into an easier gear, then would ghost shift suddenly when I wasn't expecting it. I apologize to those around me who heard the string of cuss words I let rip during this segment. I got passed by men, but not by women, but I still did not feel like this was a good ride for me.
What would you do differently?:

Train more!
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

All I had to do was rack the bike, slip on my flats, grab my hat and number belt. And it took me over a minute to do all that. Oi.
What would you do differently?:

Do some transition practice.
Run
  • 25m 41s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

This didn't feel as bad as the bike. I knew it would be slow and am quite happy it was this fast considering I only ran 6 miles in July. This is where I want to focus. I need to be able to run consistently and stay healthy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing on this particular day. Did the best I could with the fitness I had left from the ironman.
Post race
Warm down:

Did a mile cool down walk with SuzanneS.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training post ironman. Still in ironman recovery.

Event comments:

I love the Greenville Sprint as it is my hometown race. I knew I was not in top form going into this, but wanted to race for the love of racing. Had a blast.

Nice job Pam! 21.85mph is still pretty darn awesome!! I like the "my thighs were erupting in flames" quote...I read it, and I knew exactly what you meant! Good use of words!

Congrats on the hardware!

Nice race Pam- even after still being in the post ironman recovery stages.  With all of the gear trouble you still smoked the bike and had a great swim for being slowed down.  It is kind of funny that we haven't actually met.  I was in your mentor group.  We live in the same town and race the same races.  Maybe after Augusta you can show me a nice 80 mile ride.  Depending on how things go in Augusta, I am considering an IM for late '10.  I am looking at IMKY or B2B.  We'll see.  Thanks for all of the advice you have given me.  I certainly do appreciate it.

Those are some great splits, especially not having really trained for speed in awhile.  Super job!

Nice race! I know it didn't feel like it - but just more proof that the mental game is more important than the physical. You got out and did it, post-IM, no training for a month...awesome!

I have to say, though, I laughed just a little bit when I saw it took you 1:24 in T1...to put on your aero helmet... I was wondering if you shaved that much time off your bike time because you were using the helmet. *snerk*
