So I was riding on Beacon Street right before Park Drive, 2 lanes there, nice and wide, giving myself a little space from the parked cars to also get better pavement.  I am riding my fixed gear.  All this honking (red light ahead) behind me and a white truck runs me off the road.  I come up next to him at light he starts screaming calling me a stupid c-nt that I was taking the whole lane, which I tried to tell him legally I can....

he continues his expletive streak so I go to take a photo of his plate and he rams me!!!!

hit and run plate

me and the bike are both fine - a bit of back strain for me that I am sure will feel great tomorrow.

Just a bit freaked.  Reported to the police but am posting this everywhere I can.

He took off right after ramming me.

That sucks.  Glad you are okay.  Let us know when they catch the bastard.  Commercial plates means maybe  he works for someone that will fire his a$$.

Not good... it's especially worrying that these encounters are occuring for no obvious reason except intolerance. Read this article: http://bicycling.com/blogs/roadrights/2009/07/30/how-should-you-respond-to-road-rage/

Also, I read somewhere (may have been BT?), that such behavior is essentially assault with a deadly weapon and the victim should press charges with the State Police (not local police). If so, that would be a felony and some serious trouble to be in. Do we have any lawyers around here who can say if this is true or not? I sure would like to know.

Had it been on the street that the guy turned onto (Park drive) that is state patrolled, but because it was on Beacon Street, that is Boston.

I did the phone report, which they did a broadcast of the guy's plate, but I have to go in in person to file a report which will either be today or later in the week....

update - the police called me back and first wanted me to call the registry and tell them a road rage incident.  But that is no longer done (at least the very nasty lady on the phone told me that) so called the police back and because the guy did actually hit me they want me to come and file a report today....which will be tonight....

though given both the heat and now my fear I might make my bike ride a trainer ride.....

I am sorry it happened to you Cat.  Glad you are ok.
I have been pretty happy with most MA drivers but I guess there are a$$holes everywhere.  I hope they arrest that driver.

glad to hear no serious harm to you. I hope you got a really good look at the guy who was driving to give a good description along with the picture of the plates. Were there any other witnesses? Hope this guy gets whats coming to him!

Wow, that's crazy...thank god you're alright.  Hey, at least you'll be riding up in NH this weekend, right?

Seriously, though, people need to learn the rules of the road when it comes to bikes.  We have as much right to the road as they do and pretty much everyone I've seen on a bike is very good about keeping as far to the right as it's safe to go.  On busy streets it can be very difficult but at the same time, if it's that busy a street then why are these drivers in such a hurry to get through?

Insane...again, glad to hear nothing serious came of it, hopefully after the charges are filed this guy will learn the proper way to deal with cyclists.

I'm so glad you are okay and that you did get his plate as to many of these incidents they get away with no consequences.

I was riding around the Winchester area last weekend.  The cars around there seem like they're a little friendlier.

There was a big article in the Boston Globe about how much the author hated cyclists.  I understand as you get closer and closer to the center of the city it may become a little less friendly.

I ride pretty much exclusively through Winchester/Woburn/West Medford area (I need to go on some longer rides) and fortunately I've never had any issues.  Of course, wherever you are you need to watch out for the drivers who aren't paying attention, but in this area the drivers that do acknowledge me will usually go out of their way to give me some space.

there have been an increase in incidents since that op ed piece and some (me included) wonder if the two are connected.

I have found when I head outbound to Newton and beyond no real issues, occasionally buzzed too close...but nothing like this.

Arlington/Winchester/Woburn/Burlington people are generally nice.  Rte 3A is part of my commute.

I guess you could start carrying a gun or a taser - oh weight that would weigh too much.  Perhaps they make a taser in carbon fiber...this could be a great marketing idea.

Seriously, glad your okay, good luck at Timberman, will see your spent self at CranberryCool  I just broke down and bought another toy, a Zipp ZedTech 900 Disc.

Several weeks ago I was also involved in a hit and run in Stoneham.  I was not seriously hurt, however I did have to be taken away by an ambulance and get checked out at Melrose / Wakefield hospital.  Shortly there after (within days), the medical bills ($5,000 +) began to show up in the mailbox.  Just wanted to let everyone know that because it was considered a motor vehicle accident, they (the folks who sent the invoices) wanted to charge the expenses to someone's auto insurance.  Since it was a hit and run, and the driver was never caught there wasn't an auto insurance claim to be made.  With that said, I had to speak to several folks at Blue Cross Blue Shield to get a special claim opened up.  BCBS had to conduct their own investigation to verify the accident actually was a hit and run before they would accept/pay the charges.  Fortunately the $5k in medical bills was taken care of by BCBS, however I am still out the $1,800 bike that was destroyed in the accident and that's another story in itself....

oh that bites.  Glad YOU are ok.  Bikes are replaceable.

This is why I went and filed a police report. Nothing may come of it for me, but this guy will likely be  repeat offender and I am SURE the D.A. will do something if that is the case.
