kimj81 - 2009-08-26 3:07 PM I hunt deer, mostly (rifle). Also pheasants and grouse (um, not with a rifle). When I have the time, I'll start getting serious about elk, but I have a 6 month old, so I'm thinking that won't be happening this season!

This is why you are one hot momma!

I'm so bummed cause I will probably miss shotgun season in WI.  One of my employees is pregnant and due at that time so I can't afford to be out of the office at all.

So I'll just have to focus on my bow skills instead.

So how long till you take the little one on their first hunt?

I own more guns than anyone else I know but I don't hunt.  I am an animal lover who would rather go out and photograph them.  I do enjoy taking my son fishing though.  My preference is remote streams in PA to catch smallmouth bass.

To answer the OP:  The kind made out of meat!

Seriously - l like to hunt deer, hog, turkey, geese, ducks, etc.  Fishing - saltwater - sea trout, snapper, flounder, redfish, etc  Freshwater - fly fishing for trout, large mouth bass okay, but I prefer more action than that...

Trout.  Fly fishing.  Went to NZ to reset my scale for big browns.  Since training, my time for fishing has almost disappeared.

When I was a kid I use to hunt, skipped school the first day of goose season every year in High School, goose, duck, squirrel, rabbit, quail, dove, pheasant. Did a lot of fishing back then as well. Today we kayak fish, mostly something to do while we kayak. I hope to catch a small bill fish, dorado/dolphin or something like that some day off the kayak.

Does trapping gophers count?  How about moles?  We have deer, phesants and turkeys here, but I don't hunt.  I've promised a co-worker that if I ever need the wildlife thinned, he'll get the call.

Will fish for anything in Florida but usually catch nothing.

No worries! That's why we call it "fishing" and not "catching."  Laughing

Great thread!!....I am new to triathlons (and BT) because I needed a hobby between hunting seasons.

Started at age 16 hunting pheasant, quail and deer (both archery and rifle).  6 years ago one of my employees turned me on to waterfowl hunting and I have been hooked ever since.

Recently my 7 year old son became interested in archery, which inspired me to dig my bow out of storage and start sending arrows down range.  Really starting to become addicted again.

I take both my daughter and son fishing for freshwater game fish.  Bass, crappie, panfish, walleye, catfish.....basically whatever will take the bait.

If anyone is contemplating a hunting trip, I would suggest looking at Kansas.  Great pheasant and mule deer hunting in the west,  great whitetail and waterfowl hunting in the east.

If your interested, I would be happy to offer any suggestions on specific locations.

Did a lot of rod 'n reel fishing as a kid in northern Indiana -- mainly crappie and bluegill.  (They taste great, by the way, lightly breaded and pan-fried.  Yum.)  In grad school, got interested in fly fishing.  Still do both when I have a chance, but haven't in a while.  However, next week I'm renting a cabin in the Sierras with family, and might check out some local streams.  My guess is the pickins will be slim this time of year, but not really sure.  (Oh and that reminds me I need to renew my license...)

I've also gone out on some fishing boats around San Diego and Newport Beach to catch ocean fish -- but I haven't caught anything that exciting yet.  Would like to try surf fishing, seems like it would be hard but potentially very fun.

Grew up hunting deer and pheasant here in Iowa. Have taken deer shotgun, bow, adn muzzleloader. Also fished walleyes and catfish a ton when I was younger (benefits of living on a lake) in between baseball seasons.

Now only fish a week out of the year on my yearly excursion to N. Minnesota but still hunt pheasants, duck and geese but havent been deer hunting in a few years. Would love get out west and elk hunt some time in the future.

Actually have my fishing trip here in about 2 weeks and get back the night before early duck opener on the 19th so I need to get busy getting ready next week.

Okay Don - two threads in one day where you got me postin pictures like I might die tomorrow.  I'm an avid recreational fisherman... and I love everything from trout on a 3 weight flyrod to blue marlin on 80 pound class tackle.  Oh and Don - when you gonna come fish with me and catch a REAL striper...

We do TONS of striped bass (we call them rockfish here in MD) fishing in the Chesapeake Bay...

Kayak fishing in March (that's a dry suit)...

In the snow... The best day we ever had in my boat - that's my friend Bryan but we caught about 100 fish this size in January at the mouth of the Chesapeak Bay in the Atlantic Ocean... oh yeah it was 19 degrees when that picture was taken:

In the sun... Here we are almost 4 months later at the very tippy top of the chesapeak bay... mouth of the susquehanna river:

One last striper - the biggest I've ever caught personally... again, excuse the hair:

My true passion is bluewater - which is just far too expensive to make a real hobby:

It is fun, and not that hard.

There are some different casting techniques. The easiest to learn is the ground cast. Then there's the pendulum cast. I think it's called a hatteras cast as well.

I've just been using the ground cast so far.

Here's a guy who does competitive casting. He has great youtube tutorials on surf casting.

I'm ready. Just say the word!

The best times are December/January at the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel near VA beach if you're feeling tough (usually cold and choppy), or March/April/May near my house in the middle chesapeake bay.  First is a 4 hour drive from Philly and second is a 2.5 hour drive.
