Regular 171 Lubbock, TX | Subject: Disappointment I feel very fortunate to live in Texas! Especially out here in good 'ol West Texas where life seems to be a little slower and everyone is very friendly. Out on a ride this morning though and was very disappointed. I was out riding the hills on the BSLT course which is here in Lubbock. I had climbed the two tougher climbs out in the back of the course and was coming up the long slow hill through the tree tunnel (anyone who has done BSLT will know where im talking about) when my chain broke. The 2 guys I was riding with left me to go get the car which was still a good 10 miles away and I started walking. 1 guy on a bicycle stopped to check on me, but he unfortunately didnt have a chain tool. I know that the course I was riding is in the middle of nowhere and there is not much traffic out that way, especially on a Saturday morning at 7:30, so I didnt expect to see many cars. But I was passed by 6 pick up trucks while I walked. I just knew that one of them was going to stop and offer to give me a ride! Not only did I not get offered a ride, but I didnt even get so much as a wave. Sure I look kinda funny in my blue and orange argyle spandex and jersey but lets go! If I had been riding alone this morning I was looking at a good 10 mile hike. I'm sure finding someone to come pick me up that early on a Saturday would not have been very easy. Very disappointed in my fellow West Texans. Sorry....had to vent somwhere!! |

LMAO -- Don't feel too bad the trucks probably just didn't see you because it is very hard to look up while text messaging while driving!! KenD is so right! |

You joke, but I saw a 2-car accident today where that was probably the cause. |

Master 1468 Montgomery, Tx | Subject: RE: Disappointment I always stop for motorcycles and bicycles if there are few people or they look in distress. We had a similar situation somewhere in wyoming when we were riding to sturgis (on our motorcycles). One of the bikes primary clutch went out and it could not be fixed on the side of the road. No one stopped, even the trailer pullers who carry the whole garage with them to rallys. It was frustrating. After many hours and a town over our chase truck was found and we were off. It stinks being stranded and even worse when people drive by and look the other way. |

Gosh, these days with all the "I helped someone on the side of the road and got mugged stories", I'm not surprised someone didn't stop. And waving? I would think they were mocking me with a wave. Thank goodness you had someone to come back and get you. Otherwise, had you been desperate I'm sure if you had flagged someone down, they might have stopped to check on you. |

Elite 2796 Texas | Subject: RE: Disappointment I rode in Mexia Texas a few weeks ago while visiting some family. Before I started my ride a local police officer pulled up and started asking me about my bike and my training, etc... He then gave me the lowdown on the road conditions and the non-emergency phone number for the police department should I have any trouble. And, since my cell phone wouldn't work where I was headed, he said just to go up and knock on the front door of any house and ask to use their phone to call him and he'd come out and pick me up. I'm surprised that happened in Lubbock. Both times I've done BSLT the locals were very hospitable. |

Member 75 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Disappointment you ride long enough it will happen. Always carry a phone so you can call someone - at least you were near the shaded part, most of that ride is wide open. really no big deal to wait 30 minutes to an hour for a ride home when you need it.... and, expect it to happen again sometime. |

Veteran 740 The Woodlands, TX | Subject: RE: Disappointment I was riding my motorcycle at rush hour in Houston last year and had a cable break that left me dead in the water. I was on the Beltway, near the 290 overpass, and as I was sitting on the shoulder, tinkering, a guy driving a semi for a major shipping company stopped. He offered to give me a ride most of the way to my house (about 20-miles away). He had a lift gate on the back of the trailer, so we push the bike onto it, loaded it up, strapped it down and took off. It felt like something right out of one of those guardian angel shows. I think I might have been on the side of the road about 3-minutes. We see the jerks when we're out riding, because they're easy to spot (honking, throwing stuff, black exhaust from the truck, the list goes on...). We don't see the people who'll help out until we're in some sort of crisis situation. Oscar, the guy who gave me the ride, wouldn't take any money from me and wouldn't give me his address. I did get a chance to thank him, but that was it. |

Expert 944 Waller County, TX | Subject: RE: Disappointment Two years ago I broke a chain 5 miles from home. I had a cell phone and no chain tool. My wife was in town doing her thing and it would be 2 hours before she could rescue me; so I started walking. I ride sockless, so I had to leave the bike shoes on and walk in the gravel part of a very sloped ditch on a narrow country road. It was pretty hot and no shade, good thing I still had a bottle of water left. After about 2 miles of hard effort, a guy pulling a trailer passes, slows down, turns around and stops to pick me up. Throw the bike in the trailer and he drives me the 3 miles to home. Saved me a bunch of time and agony. So there are some good folks out there; we all have a chance to be one. |
