I'm a huge fan of Fat Frogs Chesapeake. They are off of 168 in Chesapeake. It is a great store with good staff. They do group rides many times a week and are true to pace - unlike some other shops in the area.Actually IN norfolk is Conte's and East Coast Bicycles. I live in Portsmouth and do the dive to FF instead of riding with the closer groups. Couple reasons... but one really good one is the FF ride is out in farm land on great roads. I end up driving out there to do a lot of my training now because I like the roads and area so much.Feel free to PM me if you need any more info.

I second the Fat Frogs shops. There is also a shop in redmill area of VA beach. Both are great and both will provide top notch service.

I'm a big fan of Conte's in Norfolk.  I've bought bikes from both East Coast Cycles and Conte's and although the service department at ECC is great, the owner/operator always seems like he'd rather be somewhere else than helping me.  Conte's, on the other hand, seem to really enjoy helping  people and their staff has even said hello and asked about my bike when I've run into them around town.

We have a good mix of bike shops...

bike beat (va beach, chesapeake, newport news), performance bikes (va beach), all about bikes (suffolk and i think va beach), east coast bikes (norfolk), contes (norfolk, va beach, newport news)..

tri clubs in the area: coastal racing, and final kick..

running club: tidewaterstriders

bike clubs: tidewater bike association and peninsula bike association

hope this helps with an outlook of things in the area.

email or PM me if you have more questions.

I second olliedawg. Thumbs down to East Coast in Norfolk. Their service is terrible I would not spend a dime in that shop.

Contes in Norfolk thumbs up. They are friendly and really helpful.
Bike Beat in hilltop in VA, also a thumbs up. Both places have people that remember you when you come in, ask about your races and rides and have a general interest in their customers and their needs.

I cant speak for the other shops from experience but have also heard good things about Contes in       VA Beach and Fat Frogs.

Not to bash East Coast, but i have to agree with everyone's opinion on the store.  Unfortunately, I spend most of my bike dollars there as I spend a lot of time at Running Etc, which is right across the street.

I work  at a great small shop in the Churchland area of portsmouth called SCAT bikes. Great service reasonable rates too, compared to some of the other shops in the area and the turn around time is only a couple days if even. Agree with previous posters on ff rides they have huge groups for lots of different levels.  the staff at most all of the shops listed are friendly and knowledgable, although I have had bad experiences at the Contes in Va beach.  It all depends on the bikes you are looking for Contes = fuji cannondale giant and speacilized, Bike Beat has Trek gary fisher and some old lemonds last time I was in not sure about fat frogs, and at scat we carry raleigh Fuji and Kestrel

Oh and welcome to the area I hope you enjoy your stay

Scott
