I guess I'm looking for reassurance more than anything.  Give you a history.  I entered a sprint tri in august.  Had been running and biking.  I let swimming go, and paid for it when it came to race day.  Big disappointment to say the least.  Now I'm getting ready for another in May 2010.  I just started my training at the Y for the swimming.  I'm working on technique, but my wind and breathing are really labored, to where I can't go more than 75 yards at a time...max.  Will this improve with time and training?  I'm 48 years old.  Thanks

Yes, yes and yes!! First of all, everything improves with training. (For me that is the bike, need alot of work on that). I was a competative swimmer in HS and college, yet hadn't touched the pool in 10 years (I am 39). The first week in the pool was hell. Couldn't breathe, arms felt like they were going to fall off and felt like I wanted to take a nap on the deck when I was done. After a summer of swimming I feel completely comfortable in the water and can do 1 mile easy OWS and still feel good. Hang in there-you will get there!!
Oh, and age has nothing to do with it!

Hello

Keep plugging along at the pool and go as much as you can.

It will come for you as is for me. Right now  I am the in the steady improvement mode.  9 weeks ago I could not swim 25 meters and last night I was doing 200 meter returns and  did a total of 850 meters.  I am still a very poor weak swimmer but I am improving every week.

Yes and yes.

If you are not breathing out underwater, learn to do so. You should be breathing out underwater, and only breathing in when you turn your head. If you turn your head and breath out and in, that will basically hyperventilate you.

Also, I would recommend some basic instruction in the off season if you weren't a swimmer as a kid. It helps.

I was the same 8 weeks ago.

you seen mr smooth?  http://www.swimsmooth.com/visualisation_beg.php
nice to see what a good swim should look like.

Some people don't promote bi-lateral breathing, another thing to wory about, but I found it to be a big help.  For me three arm strokes is just the right time to exhale into the water and breathe in to the side on the third stroke.
It helped calm my frantic swim down.

Just something else to try...

No 1 thing is to just keep at it, 3 -4 swims/week for me got me to 1/2 mile in 22 mins. with oomph left for a spin class

Stick with it, training takes time.  I remember when things started to come together for me and doing my first long swims.

If you're self teaching look at video's to understand the motions.  Look into a swim lesson(s) since your at a Y.  I have one coming up with our Y swim director!

Yep, your endurance will improve with more training - just make sure you relax a bit - find a comfortable pace and work from there. You'll be amazed!

I began swimming this summer after almost 30 years.  I liked getting back in the water.  But after a few laps I was very hot and breathing hard.

Then I came across the Total Immersion technique.  I have got the book and CD and love it!  I swam 100 lengths (2500 yards) the other evening and could have gone even more!

Check it out at totalimmersion.net or just google "total immersion swimming".  I am a marathoner who has taken up triathlons this summer.  I like to refer to Total Immersion as the Jeff Galloway method for swimming - but you never stop.  You glide like a fish!

I started swim training last year for my first tri this past june.  I made it a month before winter weather set in and destroyed my motivation for getting wet and walking out in to the cold air.  I didn't pick up the swim training again until April and was fine.  When I started again, I dedicated 3 days a week to the pool and saw dramatic increases in my distance and pace.  When I first started.....100m was it before I was hanging on the edge of the pool gasping for breath.  350m took 30 minutes  for me to complete (which included the hanging on for dear life at the edge of the pool).  Today it is no problem to do 2000m + in similar time frame.  It was literally like a light switch for me.  One day I felt good in the pool and the meters kept rolling by and my pace was far better than it had ever been.

I guess my point is don't give up.....it will come, just keep TRI'ING.

Oh, one more thing.....definitely watch the videos on this site.  They are a great resource and helped me tremendously.

Good luck!
