I have never worn one, but we have to tomorrow.  Is there any secret to putting it on, wearing it, taking it off afterwards?

Also, I have a Garmin 305 to track my time, etc.  I've heard of some people putting it under their swim cap to track the entire race time.  Should i even consider this?

Put the cap on over your goggles.

Back when I had a Gramin, I didn't.  If this is your first, I'd say 'no'.  Keep it simple and leave the Garmin with your bike (or at home...).

I alway put on from the front and pull it to the back.  Some olks might advise you to put your googles on first and pull your swim cap over the top.  This assists with the cap interferring with the seal around your googles if you wear googles that are the larger kind like the Aqua sphere Seal type and also prohibits you losing your googles should someone (accidentially) kick them off or pull them off in the swimming washing machine at the start or around the turn bouys.

When you pull the cap off pull it from the edge (back or front).  Don't grab the cap from the top of your head and try to pull it off.  Big waste of time and effort.  As you leave the water begin getting your wetsuit down to at elast your waist and then your cap adn googles.  If you have sleeves on your wetsuit some might take the goggles and cap off first and pull them into the sleeve and leave them contained in the sleeve as they pull their arm through thereby not having to worry about the cap and googles as you run to T1.

Other than not using a swim cap before I would not try something you haven't done before in training.  Pretty expensive item to end up at the bottom of a lake.  If it is in a pool you will have to stop and get the darn thing.  You just never know.

Good luck and enjoy yourself.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll leave the garmin on my bike for sure.  Shouldn't be too bad then.

A lot of people say to put it on over your goggle straps, but I've never found this necessary.  I always take the cap and scoop up water with it, then bend forward and pull it over my head while it's still full.  The water causes it to expand when it presses against your head, and it pops right on.  Usually, I actually have to slide it up a little bit, because it's on too far.  Then I put my goggles on over it.

The caps are probably brand new and have some sort of baby powder/corn starch to keep them from sticking together when packaged. This stuff will also keep the cap from sticking to your head. Before the race starts, fill the cap with water a few times to rinse it out. Try and get as much of the powder out of it as possible or the cap could end up sliding off while you're swimming. Not a huge deal, but it can get really annoying.
