Tri Columbia
65F / 18C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 27m 25s
Overall Rank = 110/845
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 10/75
Pre-race routine:

Went with the BrianPBN shake, an english muffin, and a Red Bull. Plus some Cytomax and a gel right before the race start. I think the red bull was a bad idea, had some #2 problems before the race, GI was a little dicey. Not sure if just nerves or what. Rack set-up was fine.
Event warmup:

None. Transition area closed 45 minutes before race start, so didn't bother doing any running or stretching.
Swim
  • 31m
  • 1650 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Best tri swim so far. Although swimming is clearly my limiter, I felt good for most of swim. Breathed well, swam well, not much break like in past races. Probably helped that the lake was completely flat, no waves or chop or anything. Definitely got tired towards the end, form started going to shit. Also, goggles fogged up so I had trouble sighting. This was compounded by the fact that the buoy colors (yellow and orange) were the same as the cap colors in my wave and the wave before!
What would you do differently?:

De-fog goggles
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

Quick (for me) T1. Suit off easily, shoes and helmet on easily. Included long run up hill.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 08m 54s
  • 25.4 miles
  • 22.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Abolutely hammered the bike. Felt good right away, was worried that I was going too hard because I kept passing people. Didn't end up getting passed at all on the entire bike. Hills felt pretty good, only had to get in the granny gear for a couple of them. Stayed in the saddle for all but one hill (small roller, almost fell when I stood up). Hammered all of the downhills, but felt relatively in control. Had to maneuver around a car to re-enter the park. Drank about 44 oz of cytomax. Probably too much for the bike, but my plan was to drink a lot on the bike so I didn't have to drink during the run. Also had a hammer gel about 45 min into the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little less.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Little trouble running on the pavement after dismounting. Otherwise quick transition. Had a cliff shot (too thick).
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 43m 44s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

The dreaded Columbia run course. Didn't feel too good at the start, drank two cups of water at start. The aforementioned GI difficulties started creaping up, was worried I'd have a bout of EBS (Explosive Butt Syndrome). Decided to not drink as much water as I would normally, and the GI problems eventually subsided. As far as the actual run, it went well otherwise. The dreaded hills actually didn't seem bad to me, probably all that crazy trail hill running I did in college. I actually dreaded the downhills more (hurt my legs and knees). Drank a cup of water at the 3 mile mark. I was definitely starting to get dehydrated around 4.5 miles, but I figured I would be better off just trying to push through and finish. I'm terrible at drinking from the cup while running, I pretty much have to stop. Also, started to get pretty hot towards the end, so I dumped a couple cups of water over my head.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more
Post race
Warm down:

Walking and stretching. Also had a double serving of Endurox plus a naproxen. Had trouble eating much (quessy stomach) so just had some Gatorade, a bagel and a banana.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim technique/endurance.

Event comments:

Great race organization, something like 800 volunteers for ~1500 athletes. Food afterwards was a little limited though (unless I missed something).

Wow!  That was a great race!  You're right, you hammered that bike course.  And then put up a great run afterwards on a very tough course.

Congratulations!

Thanks for all the complements, I had a blast. And Frank (and others), if you were out there volunteering, thanks for all the help. The volunteers were great (lots were kids too, cool!).

It's a deal! Of course, I honestly don't know much about biking, so it'll be a short lesson

Running on the other hand, I do know a fair amount...

Then how do you explain 1:08 on the bike? That's crazy!

Honestly, I've only been biking for about 10 months. I obviously knew how to ride a bike but never did anything seriously before that. All I've done is "put the miles in" as well as some high cadence work.

Of course the secret rocket pack helped
