Pre-race routine:

Had been ill a couple days leading up to the race and my fever broke race morning so I decided to race. Usually b-fast then off to transition to set up. Forgot my Powertap head unit (even though it is on both of my checklists). Back to the hotel, race back to transition before it closes. I was so scatter brained for this race. My fever just had me in a fog all of Saturday and Sunday.
Event warmup:

No warmup as they wouldn't let you in the water. Did maybe 20 Meter warmup just after jumping in as it was a deep water start.
Swim
  • 23m 27s
  • 2143 yards
  • 01m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

Almost forgot my timing chip and noticed it 15 mins before my wave started. Again, in a complete fog. Picked it up and made it back to the start.
Transition 1
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

I couldn't find my bike. I was standing there in the correct aisle trying to remember what my bike looked like. The strangest feeling. I mean seriously I have about 6,000 miles riding on it this year alone and I can't remember what it looks like. So then I tell myself to look for my wheels, then I see my front Spynergy. I was about 10 ft. from my bike. Stood there for probably 15 seconds, which is an eternity in transition. As far as my transition, a complete cluster F. I got to my bike, and emmediately pulled it off the rack. Now I have to balance my bike while trying to put on my helmet and switch out the f'ing watches. I finally get that done and start running with my bike. The transition area it very bumpy and about 1/3 of my aero bottle worth of infinit is spilled all over my bike. I ended up carrying it for part of the way. Crossed the mount line and was off.
What would you do differently?:

fiure out the watch thing. tie a big bright pink ballon to my bike rack spot.
Bike
  • 2h 39m 11s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.11 mile/hr
Comments:

Completely disappointed with this bike performance. Couldn't hold goal watts at all.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

average T2, a little slower than usual. I thought I had a good rack spot as I was very close to Swim In and Run out, however when I think about it now that isn't great because you can run faster without your bike than you can with it. My rack spot meant I had to span the entire transition, both to bike out and bike in. Oh well can't do anything about that.
Run
  • 1h 34m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Only had 6 miles at my goal pace of 6:46. Had to walk two aid stations to drink which cost me about 25 seconds those miles.

Down river so hard to compare how I did I think this was a average swim for me. Lots of seaweed clumps to navigate around and the dude behind me started wearing on my nerves. You know there is "drafting ettiquete" on the swim. It's cool to ocationally touch someone's toes in front of you. It isn't cool to touch someone on every stroke. I mean both left and right arm strokes for pretty much the entire swim. Dickhead!
Suit: Full
Course: Broke my Garmin 310XT Friday night and bought an new one Saturday morning before leaving Atlanta becuase using it in a race was on the list of new things which needed to be worked through before IMFL. Well when I was setting it up the strap on the new one came undone. The pin holding the strap on came out. So I was not confident in wearing it on the swim. $800 in watches is a bit excessive to not even have one of them to use if the stap breaks in the water and I loose it. I started with my Timex and switched watches in T1. Didn't really work too well. Need to rethink this one.

Off on the bike and into my shoes. Immediately my legs feel really flat. Then I start hearing this clapping sound and I couldn't figure out if it was the guy in front of me or me. I stopped peddaling for second to see if it was my drivetrain and it continued. I passed him and it didn't go away so I start looking down and notice the sticker covering my valve stem is flapping in the wind. I pull over and just pull it off. Get going again and about 2 mins later went over the bridge to head into SC and out pop both my bottles in my rear cages. 1200 calories. I have to stop. I now watch as one of the bottles starts to roll to the inside lane as the road is sloped that way. I pick up the bottle I could and notice the other bottle is the triple strength bottle with 930 calories in it. I have to have this bottle. While technically illegal to cross the centerline, I quickly went and got it. That was at least 2 mins of B.S. Back on my bike and passing the folks I had already passed, some for the third time. Wind was really whipping good now, probably 18-20 mph. The crosswinds were pretty dangerous at times as you really had to keep a tight grip.
Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: Too many riders for this course. There were groups of 20-30 bikes with no enough hills to break them up. The cross winds helped some, but the headwinds just bunched everyone up again. With the 24 waves and me being in the 22 wave there was lots of passing. In some sections bikes were 5 wide with all the passing. Sometimes it felt more like a group ride than a time trial.

Decided to run without my fuelbelt. Everytime I do this I regret it. I think maybe this time I've learned my lesson. Aid stations too far a part. In the briefing meeting they said every 1.2 miles, which is what prompted the "no fuelbelt for me" thinking. What I think they meant to say is every 1 - 2 miles as some of them were 2 miles apart. Sunny in the mid 80's and 2 miles between aid startions = some very thirsty runners. Ended up having to drink way too much at a time which lead to some mild GI issues after the aid stations.

nice race despite coming off being ill and having a lot of stuff go wrong! congrats, way to overcome. I had a hell of a time finding my bike as well. and I must have looked like an idiot trying to rerack it as I wandered around muttering my number. The racks weren't always consecutively numbered in my aisle (either that or I was delirious and couldn't count)agreed on the aide stations. I kept over drinking b/c I was so thirsty and also had GI issues. hope you have some recovery time now, impressive work for coming off being ill.

I'm laughing b/c I've lost my bike in T1 in a race that had only 400 participants. Great race despite being sick the days/week leading up to it.

When you go to setup your gear in transition before the race, spend a few minutes jogging: 1. from the 'swim in' to your bike in the rack, 2. from your bike to the 'bike out', 3. from the 'bike in' to your bike rack, 4. from your bike to the 'run out'.  Then do each one again, and look for visual clues, which will not move -- overhead powerlines, trees, end of the carpet, South African flag, etc.  This 10 minutes of "training" and looking like an idiot will save 30 seconds to a minute of being an idiot.  Not that I have personal experience with the latter : )  oh no.  How many hours of training does it take to shave a minute off your swim split?

I know it's all a matter of perspective, but, man, I would have liked to have a race more like yours than mine (timewise, I mean). Good job...especially coming off an illness!

I ended up going down the wrong aisle on the way back in with the bike. Ergh.

Its totally against every fiber of my being to try and 'console' you for a sub-5 finish, but if you were going to have a 'scatter-brained' day, I'm glad it wasn't for your A race. Sounds like you learned what didn't work well...that's priceless!
