Regular  156  |  Subject: T-3During an olympic race a few weeks ago I made an unplanned pit stop. There had been a porta john at the first water stop on the run. I had hoped there would be one at the turn around as well, but no such luck. I made a quick detour into the woods. I was discreet, but I'm sure there was little doubt what I was doing. I could not hold it any longer. Is this a penalty worthy offense, bad manners or a-okay? |

Expert 1087 Portland | Subject: RE: T-3 you have to be very careful with PIP (peeing in public) it is an arrestable offense, and should the judge be in a bad mood, you can also get slapped with indecent exposure and have to register as a sex offender! The only reason I give this warning is because a friend of mine stopped on his bike on the side of a road one time and had a cop drive by that was in a bad mood and slapped him with PIP. Use your discretion and hope for nice cops! |

The park or locality could fine you or remove you from the park. There may be a USAT rule or a race specific rule I don't know about. I personally pee on the run (not races) often. Pick a wooded area and make sure no one is watching. Yes, when I come out of the woods and someone sees me there is not much mystery as to what I was doing but on the running path it is understood by most if not all others (as long as you didn't litter or expose yourself). During marathons I have peed in discrete locations every time. Assuming no-one sees your nakedness or act of peeing (even if it is obvious what you were doing) : Is it a penalty - prob not. If it is, is it worth it? If you gotta go, you gotta go. Is it bad manners? No. If some one sees you nekkid or going - penalty - yes, is it worth it? better to pee yourself than do it in view bad manners - yes |

Well, sure, if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?  If I had to, I would pee on the bike but I would make darn sure no USAT officials were around. And for sure I have pee'd out on the road many times, but I understand it's against the law and try and be super descreet. But the answer to the OP's question is it is a rule violation and it is illegal. |

I don't see in the rule book where there is anything addressing urination specifically. You could run into problems with multiple penalties assessed for 1 incident including additional items (after public nudity) like re-entry and maybe entire course, if they wanted too, since the odds that you left and entered the course at the exact same point are probably not too good.. |

About 100 yards after T2 exit there was the rest rooms right on the side of the run course, ran in and ran out same exit and reentry point. sure my 5k was a slower but that 5k would have felt a lot longer with a full bladder. This wouldn't have even been an issue had the race not started over an hour late. |

The ultra I'm doing in December states that you must 'bury all human waste at least 6 inches into the ground and must be at least 50 feet away from a water supply." So they just assume your going to, um, 'unload' in the bushes. Its on mostly fire roads and trails. |
