During an olympic race a few weeks ago I made an unplanned pit stop. There had been a porta john at the first water stop on the run. I had hoped there would be one at the turn around as well, but no such luck. I made a quick detour into the woods. I was discreet, but I'm sure there was little doubt what I was doing. I could not hold it any longer. Is this a penalty worthy offense, bad manners or a-okay?

I believe it's actually against the law and yes, it is grounds for a DQ.

you have to be very careful with PIP (peeing in public) it is an arrestable offense, and should the judge be in a bad mood, you can also get slapped with indecent exposure and have to register as a sex offender!

The only reason I give this warning is because a friend of mine stopped on his bike on the side of a road one time and had a cop drive by that was in a bad mood and slapped him with PIP.  Use your discretion and hope for nice cops!

Rules are specific about nudity and you can get penalized or DQ'd. You were concealed so I don't think the race would penalize you. The park or locality could fine you or remove you from the park. There may be a USAT rule or a race specific rule I don't know about. I personally pee on the run (not races) often. Pick a wooded area and make sure no one is watching. Yes, when I come out of the woods and someone sees me there is not much mystery as to what I was doing but on the running path it is understood by most if not all others (as long as you didn't litter or expose yourself).

During marathons I have peed in discrete locations every time.

Assuming no-one sees your nakedness or act of peeing (even if it is obvious what you were doing) :

Is it a penalty - prob not.

If it is, is it worth it? If you gotta go, you gotta go.

Is it bad manners? No.

If some one sees you nekkid or going - penalty - yes,

is it worth it? better to pee yourself than do it in view

bad manners - yes

What about all the talk about pee-ing on the bike, during the run, while sitting on the grass in transition, etc.? Are those treated differently?

Oh, I can assure you that if a race official catches you doing that, they will DQ you in a heart beat.

Nope, even in Ironman there are rules prohibiting peeing on the bike, but they aren't very striclty enforced. If you stop and pee in someone's yard, they will bust you. They can't afford to have the local community up in arms over indecent exposure allegations.

Are you citing rules against indecent exposure or rules against public urination?

Well, sure, if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? If I had to, I would pee on the bike but I would make darn sure no USAT officials were around. And for sure I have pee'd out on the road many times, but I understand it's against the law and try and be super descreet. But the answer to the OP's question is it is a rule violation and it is illegal.

At least peeing with your shorts on isn't indecent exposure.

Good point!

as far as I can tell it's just a variable time penalty for violating 3.4n although probably could get you DQ'ed if you did it in an amazingly flagrant way.  I don't see in the rule book where there is anything addressing urination specifically.  You could run into problems with multiple penalties assessed for 1 incident including additional items (after public nudity) like re-entry and maybe entire course, if they wanted too, since the odds that you left and entered the course at the exact same point are probably not too good..

And to think, I thought this thread was about T3 wine.

I though it was going to be like the 19th hole in golf

T3 would be like the limping walk to the food table and socializing post race.

I found a T2.5 at my last race. About 100 yards after T2 exit there was the rest rooms right on the side of the run course, ran in and ran out same exit and reentry point. sure my 5k was a slower but that 5k would have felt a lot longer with a full bladder. This wouldn't have even been an issue had the race not started over an hour late.

I actually timed my split (37 seconds) so I could deduct it from my overall time. I went "into" the woods, so I'm sure I didn't gain any time by shortening the course. Thanks for all the input though.

The HIM I did in July clearly stated this would be an instant DQ.

The ultra I'm doing in December states that you must 'bury all human waste at least 6 inches into the ground and must be at least 50 feet away from a water supply." So they just assume your going to, um, 'unload' in the bushes. Its on mostly fire roads and trails.

There's a rather large social penalty if you don't do it and lose it in your pants. Can't ignore that one, either.

Hey

If you ate mexican food the night before the race and you had to drop a duece in the trees. Do it.

If you get DQ's then dont eat mexican food before a race.

If there is a port-o-potty use it or ask someone along the run route if you can use their bathroom.
