Subject: And the punishment should be?
I know, innocent until proven guilty, but during today's long run I was contemplating the whole balloon hoax issue.

Parents will likely plead not guilty and want a trial (GREAT, more of our tax dollars wasted to give them more publicity)

It is unlikely they can ever repay the cost of the search/recovery

Putting them in jail just leads to MORE of our tax dollars being spent

IF they're found guilty, what about the kids?? Isn't it bad enough that they have 2 publicity hounds for parents? How much additional damage would it do to them to take them from parents?

Community service? For LIFE? Every weekend picking trash off the highway? Donating time to underpriveleged kids with his science knowledge?

What does COJ suggest?

Mandatory volunteer service for the city/state every weekend @ minimum wage until the debt is paid off. Yes I realize this would take the rest of their lives.

even worse, we could just ignore them - for them that would be the most painful punishment of all.

Fines, weekend jail time and community service could be arranged for both parents. A schedule could be set up to prevent either parent from being in jail or doing service while the other was. No need to load the state with the burden of taking the kids away.

Punish them as hard as they punished Rangel for tax evasion.  That will teach them!

I was going to say that a lien should be placed against any future profits that they do make from shows/talk show appearances etc, until every last expense that was incurred has been repaid.

I believe I heard the maximum punishment is six years in jail. Sounds good to me. Seriously.

As far as the kids, these parents seem unfit to me. Pressuring that kid to lie made him physically sick, and I think it would be horrible for him psychologically. I think foster parents may be the better option for those kids to get a good upbringing.

Whatever else is involved, it needs to include this. Garnish wages too. They should absolutely pay for the resources they wasted.

Perhaps I haven't been following this closely enough (good for me), but other than some local law enforcement time/resources, what should they have to pay back?  It lasted like 2 hrs right.

And in regards to the parents.  Can ANY parent say that they have never asked their kids to lie about something?  Was that a horrible horrible thing to not tell your sister about the Easter Bunny.  Guess what...it's a parent telling a kid to lie.

Law enforcement for two hours, including aircraft, can be pretty pricey. I heard the field it landed in was damaged somehow, so I would think that owner has an ironclad civil suit.

Yes, many parents will tell children to lie. They are told to lie about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, to lie to get discounts for kids 4 and under, to lie about the food in Mommy's purse at the grocery store, to lie about Daddy's bag of powder under the floorboards, to lie about the bruises on their face and to lie about sending a lot of public safety personnel on a wild goose chase, reducing coverage for everyone else.

It is up to the courts and the state family welfare system to determine which lie is bad enough to determine if the parents are fit or not. In my mind, reducing fire and police coverage is incredibly dangerous, and should be treated as such.

I agree. They're fame whores, so ignoring them would be the greatest punishment. Throw in remuneration and some community service and I'm satisfied.
