FYI. The 2010 National Duathlon Championship will have its final year in Richmond. Where its going after that I do not know. For some reason, the USAT Duathlon Committee decided to shorten the first running leg from 10K to 5K. So its 2- 5K runs and a 38K bike. I'm kinda bummed about both changes. Never had a chance to do a longer duathlon.

Thanks for the update. I am bummed it is leaving Richmond too but the distance change is good for me. This may be my last chance to du one locally. I will try to see how it will fit my schedule for next year.

It changes every three years.  We had worlds and then three years of the national championship.

ETA: Dan, the Richmond Tri Club used to produce a duathlon out at West Creek, but they stopped doing it to better support the National Du Championship.  I'm guessing they'll put it on again once Nationals is gone.

Yes, but it sold out sometime in April for the on-road events on Sunday.  The off-road on Saturday did not sell out.

so a 1 day pass is no bueno?  I only plan on doing 3 usat events next year, but I guess I could spend the extra $10 to see my totally noob like rankings.

and wow.. I was looking at the results from last year's event, like 2-300 people did the off-roader, while 800+ raced on the road.

Looks like you can get a one day pass.  I feel like that is a change from previous years, but I could be wrong.

If you are going to do 4 USAT events you should definitely join and save $ since it is less than $40 to join.

I think more people will move up to the Championship race since there is no 10K.

I was assuming that you can get the one day USAT pass when you pickup your packet. That was how it has been at other events.  Can anyone confirm that  from previous experiences with the race?

According to the website, you can get a one day pass for the event.  I don't remember if that's how it worked last year, but it is definitely possible this year.

Here's the link:  http://duathlonnationals.com/duathlon_registration.htm

Yeah you have to pay the standard $10 fee for the one day deal according to the site.  I'll be joining USAT next year since it will probably pay off.  Looks like something I might have to sign up for... biking and riding are improving, I hardly ever swim.  Sounds like I'm prep'ing for a duathlon.

I've signed up for the off-roader.  We'll still be doing a 10k run to start.  I'm kind of wondering why they changed it to 5k to start the road race.  The website only said that they did it, and didn't seem like they gave much of an explanation.

How technical is the off road course? I would love to try one sometime. I do a lot of trail running but almost zero mountain biking.

medium technical.. it's all urban features and built trails so nothing like you'd see riding in the backcountry, but when I did the course last year during my xterra race, I walked quite a few sections.  Lots of people will take the technical parts of the trail cross style, dismount, run up/down, and get back on.  No shame.

Be prepared to carry your bike up 2 flights of stairs, and either carry it down one or ride it down one flight, there's also a narrow (~2 foot wide) concrete bridge in the middle.

The trail run is basically like a x-country trail, and goes through some pretty smooth single track with some short ups/down and tight turns.

Any idea how short it is?  I was looking at the run times and thinking they looked awful fast.

It was 2.56 miles.

However, due to the new 5k distance for the 1st run, the 5k's are going to be legit or atleast is my guess.

If your aiming for a certain time goal, expect this to be dead on for a 5k.
