Wear bandaids over your nipples during long races. Sound stupid? i was running in a synthetic coolmax shirt that i though would be low friction, lets just say there were two blood spots on the front of my white shit by the end of the half marathon i ran this weekend! I can say for sure that i would have never seen that comming. I think it was because it was so hot during the race and i was using a lot of sponges, the fabric must have been more abrasive when wet.

Outch!
has this happened to anyone else? what do you people do to prevent this?

Scott

Scott,

Congratulations for the 1/2 marathon! Unfortunately, I can't help with the nipple question, but I am sure you'll receive a lot of advice. As for the heat, it was also quite hot during the 10k on Saturday. It was quite a difference from the weather we trained in since the beginning of the spring!

i agree! the heat on sunday was just foul. the thermometer on my car said 24 degrees and it felt humid as a jungle. I managed to finish in 1:56 which is great because i was hoping for a 2:00 race time.

hope you had fun!

Happens more often (as you would expect) in full marathons, wait at the finish line and you'll see plenty of bloody nips.

They do make a product just for this (talk about your niche market) at www.nipguards.com

I put Body Glide on mine and haven't had any more soreness or tenderness since... but my long runs are 7.5miles.... results may vary with different people.

Elastoplast bandages plain and simple. They have a great product out there called Spots 50.

I don't know if Elastoplast are available in the US (you can see the product I am talking about at www.elastoplast.ca click on "all products" then choose "plastic" and then choose the last item on the right).

They are small, round disks that are a perfect fit for an abraided nipple or to protect nipples. The best part - 50 in a box and very inexpensive.

Band-Aid makes a similar product. I never go on a long run without putting these on first. They cost about 4 dollars CDN for 50.

Take a close look at my avatar. I now try to remember to always wear 1-inch square "spot" bandaids and the nips are fine.

I throw on Body Glide for my long runs (20+ miles) and I usually am fine. Every once in a while I will forget to apply on medium runs and I will be a little tender for a couple of days. Seriously, Carmex after the fact really helps.
