I made it!  Just a question . . . why do they choose midnight on Halloween night for registration?  Sure, it's 9:00 for the west coast - but why not noon on Saturday?

I did it last year, and the water "tasted" like swimming anywhere along Long Island Sound. It wasn't that bad really. Just DONT put your feet down at the end of the swim until a volunteer pulls you onto the ramp. You will hear this many times. Fast swim!: You will bust your Olympic swim PR by a LOT.

There's a lot of useful information on this thread. It's the official race thread from 2009.

I got shut out. I had a great time last year, so I am disppointed not to be doing it this year.

It is a great race, and the Hudson's not as bad as people say. The currents make you swim much faster.

I may volunteer. I really appreciated the volunteers last year.

Good luck to all who are doing it.

The swim is fine, did the race in 2008 and had no problems in the swim. Probably PR the swim. It is an expensive race, even more if you are not local and have to rent a room. I learned this too late, get a room near transition where it is quiet(er). I stayed near the "official" hotel which is expensive and being NYC, noisy (siriens, horns, etc), which means a very long night of no sleep. If you can find a place near transition, it's quiet and closer to finish.

I may volunteer as well. I actually chose not to try to get in. Too damn expensive for an Olympic and I've done the race already. Maybe next time.

As for the Hudson swim... depending on when your start is, you can pretty much float down the river (if you choose). You almost have to beat your PR if you're going all out. And NO - do not put your feet down at the end unless you want to be hip-deep in muck. The rest of the swim is not that bad at all.

zionvier - 2009-10-30 5:33 PM I'm scared of the Hudson River, that's one dirty 1500m swim.  It's like the Jersey shore in the 80s, needles floating around and stuff. :-D

HEY!  I take offense to you trashing the Jersey Shore!  FYI, BOTh the Jersey Shore and the Husdson River are the cleanest they have been in 100 years! Safe for fishing, swimming, and tossing dead bodies into!

If Cramer can swin the Hudson, so can you!

BTW, Jersey is the greatest state in the Union, and I'll die defending that statment!

I'm from the Jersey Shore, so you don't need to defend it... it's a great state to be FROM.   I'll actually be there in 2 weeks, thinking about doing the Atlantic City Half Marathon even.

I did an OWS race in the Hudson on Saturday. It was a little further South than the NYC tri swim (Christopher St. Pier to Battery Park) and the water was fine. I didn’t encounter any debris at all, didn’t encounter any bad smells, and even found the water to be a little clearer than I’d remembered it being in the past.

Hooray for an early wave! I hope I get a red or silver cap. Already got a yellow one from 09.
