Holy crap, Elvin, that is a lot for a guy who only did short races last year! Is this part of a suicide-by-triathlon plan of yours??

Na... I am in the "Here-is-the-candy-jar-pick-a-few" stage.  So you won't be attending my funeral next year.  Laughing

When will you guys register for steelhead? (or muskoka, or Cedar Point?)

Registration for these races should stay open until almost race day, but you should book accomodations early. The nice places fill early and you can always cancel if you don't do the race.

That something I should consider...

Steelhead is 1.5 hr away from my house.  Is it a bad idea to leave early that morning and travel over there?  If so, thats a big plus...

Up until last year you were required to drop off your bike the day before, as you are at most 70.3s and IMs. Its helpful to listen to the race talks at the expo and have a look at the course and transition area. I think its worth staying there the night before.

You guys inspire me!

Ok! Newbie here, Did GT 12.9 in Wasaga last Sept. Fell in love and now I just got my Wetsuit in mail Friday. Fits like a glove!
Now, Since I have done a couple of 1/2 marys in Sept-Oct 09, already registered for a 30k and a 1/2 mary in the spring, I thought that I would be ready to graduate to a sprint distance. What do you all think?

Planning on doing
June:Binbrook GT12.9,  Welland Sprint 2 weeks later,
Sept: Wasaga GT12.9 as I want to take a family vacation the following week and go to Lakeside II for a sprint and kids could do KOS.

Do any of you think it is too much?

Am running now and planning on going back to swimming+cycling in January.

Welcome to BT!

I'm sure that you'll be ready for sprints!!! Is GT12.9 "Give it a Tri"?

I think it depends on you - and how racing fits into your schedule.  I had a friend who raced quite a bit last year.  His only comment was that it didn't leave a lot of time between for training.  But racing is fun and if it's shorter distance it's definitely doable.

x2 - except the race talks.  They totally freaked me out.  "Bad pavement at mile ____, bad corner at ____."  No thanks.  I won't remember where the course is supposed to go anyway - and I definitely won't be first.  I read the rules, make sure I know what to and not to do and that's it for me.  I'm a bit of a basket case before races anyway - I don't need any more information.  Just my 0.02$ though...

I booked my campsite in January.  (Then of course - I also registered in January...)

Since I don't even know about the bike drop-off, I will listen to Dave's advice and listen to the race talk at expo

Any other obvious information I should know?  such as... what is expo?

Steelhead did allow for bikes to be dropped off on race morning for the first time last year. I still prefer to get this out of the way the day before. Being there the day before allows you to familiarize yourself with the flow in transition, drive the run course or even the bike course if you want, do a short swim in the lake etc. There are some inexpensive motels along the interstate like the Red Roof that Matt stayed in last year. I would not recommend the dive that I was in. The expo has booths from several bike shops and other suppliers selling last minute items you might need, lots of souvenir items from the race, a free pasta dinner, and a detailed talk about the course from the race director. As Stef said they go into a lot more detail at the race talk than most people need. There is a detailed guide on the website that has most of the useful information about the course, such as where aid stations are, what they have at aid stations etc.

Welcome to BT! If you have already done some half-marys I think that you will find the transition to sprint races pretty easy, and you could probably even try an Oly. Enjoy!

Read the FAQ on the website.  It will tell you about the expo, schedule for race talks, when to drop off your bike, etc.  Remember you need to wear your bracelet to get in and out of transition.

I second what Stef says here.  This past summer was my first doing sprints, and I did 6 in total.  The first 4 were all two weeks apart from each other, while there was a month in between each of the next two races.  Every single race had such a phenomenal atmosphere, and the racing itself is a ton of fun! The only slight negative was that in the races that were only 2 weeks apart, I found that there wasn't much time for me to make significant improvements in my times - by the time I factored in a couple rest days after/before races (plus taking off days I refereed soccer, which was actually quite a few), it didn't leave me with much time to do significant training.  The last two races, having a month in between to train for each, I found there was a bit more time to do some speed work and stuff like that, and I really improved my race times.  I'm sure each person's experience is different, but this is how mine worked out.

Anyway, it really comes down to what you personally prefer and how much time you have, but it sounds like you have a great plan for 2010.  Good luck and have fun!

Absolutely go  for the Oly. You're more than ready. The swim distance isn't that much longer  and if you're running half Mary's you'll kick ~!@@ in an OLY. The biggest difference in an Oly is for your hydration and fueling. As you're going a longer disatnce you will need to have more with you.
