It's super handy.

Beware, though, if using a wireless router - some brands (belkin) can cause calls to drop very rapidly.  Generally have to make sure the firmware is updated and probably have to open a port for skype as well.

I use it all the time for work. I don't have a land line, so for 2.95 a month I can call any phone from my house. Works best with a headset.

I use it daily, as a tool for direct real time chats to the team in Africa, Europe and further abroad, it's invaluable.

for the issue of it locking up WiFi routers, this typically can be resolved by the setting in skype options, there is an option to allow port 80- and 443 for alternate connections.  unchecking this stops Skye acting as a SuperNode.

Stopping Skype acting as a supernode stops multiple connections through your WiFi router which the router would see as an issue and crash, or block.

Skype itself is a great tool, like I said, we all use it in house, and we all allow clients to reach us via skype, if my skype is on, I am available and the clients know they will get an instant response.

I use it all the time, have family in Singapore and we "see" each other every Friday and Saturday night, well it is morning for them, night for me.  Works like a charm and it is FREE!

When my oldest was in Nepal for a semester abroad, we used it frequently to stay in touch.  We weren't using the video, but the "phone calls" back and forth were fine.  We often used the computer's speakers and a mic so we could all talk to her at the same time, and hear what she said.

Video call once or twice a week with my parents back east.  Next best thing to being there in person.

2 years ago my brother in law and neice went to Peru on a mission trip.  We spoke with each other over Skype - was just like they were in the next room.  No time lag at all.

We had a pretty fancy and expensive Polycom video conferencing setup to connect Offices and Factory's in the US, Taiwan, China and Mexico.  We switched to using Skype and actually found it to be a better solution even before factoring the cost and administration.

We live in Australia (for this year) and I talk to my family more now than I did when we only lived an hour away from them.  It's very easy for them to hop online and see that I'm online (since I work at home over here) and we'll spend an hour or so just chatting.  It really is the closest thing to having a face-to-face conversation.

I also use it as my phone back to the US.  We only pay $12.95 a month for the ability to call any phone in the US and landlines here in AUS.  We have found that it's worked out a lot better (and cheaper) than other alternatives such as Vonage.

Pat and I used it a lot to keep in touch while I was living in Scotland. I still use it to call the UK/RoI when I need to. We have a handset that was a gift from a coworker, and that's pretty great because it means we can dial anywhere there's a wifi connection.

We've started to use it for board meetings.  We have instituted a rule that you have to have your camera on to skype the meeting, however.  I need face to face contact with my board members.
