I'll be turning the big 4-0 next month and I'd like to hear of some ideas for a celebration. Many of my friends are triathletes/runners, so it could be themed around athletics but I also have friends who aren't athletic so I wouldn't want to exclude them either. Keep in mind that it will right after the holidays, so I'd like to avoid anything extravagant and expensive. Thanks!

A Dairy Queen ice cream cake!  Yeah, I said it.  And we are all invited.

It depends on what kind of shindig you'd dig!  Hubby and I threw a wine party which was an amazing success and would be fun (though not athletically themed) for a birthday celebration- we provided the food and everyone brought their favorite wine, so then everyone at the party was introduced to lots of new wines and it didn't break the bank for anyone.

You could have "Birthday Olympics" with trike races, 3 legged races, or you could even take that to the other side with "Over the Hill Olympics" and include maybe a pinanta contest with a cane, wheelchair races etc.  That's mildly athletic and fun for everyone I think.

Or a grownup pizza party, you make the dough and people bring toppings (or you provide them) and everyone can make their own personal pizza.

I dunno, I'll turn on my e-mail updates for this though, so if you want to share more about what you're into, I'll see what else I can think of.  My Hubby turns the big 40 in a couple weeks, so we've been trying to figure out a fun and inexpensive way to mark the occasion too.

My 40th this year consisted of hopping a plane to Minnesota for my first 1/2 marathon.

here is something I did for my wife on her 40th.  it was a suprise for her but would be fun even if not.  Party at our house and instead of the typical 40th gag gifts I asked people if they whished to bring a gift to bring a bottle of wine.  with the bottle of wine write why they chose it on a card.  she received some pretty intersting bottles of wine and notes.  and everyone seemed to have fun as she read the different cards.

Very good idea.  I was thinking of "walking" a half with my family when I turn 38 and inviting everyone, but that can become expensive for my large family, so a simple 5k/10k would be a great idea.  It might spark some people into doing them more often.

For my husband's 40th, I threw a surprise golf outing. I had one of his best friends make a golf date with him and had all the guests arrive at the golf course early and surprise him when he walked into the clubhouse. Then, we all went out in teams and golfed 9 holes, came back to club house and had a great party! It was tons of fun, if you like golf. And even if you don't, it was still fun! I rode around in a golf cart handing out "adult beverages" to those in need, and took all the pictures.
