I was planning on doing the Patriot Oly in September but they are only doing the sprint and half, so I was wondering what anyone knew about Naylor's Beach? I could not in the "official thread" for it. This will be only my second Oly if I do Rocketts in July. Thanks for your help.

Considered it last year but got injured. I remember hearing that it was challenging. I think the run or bike or possibly both are hilly. I was really hoping for the Patriot Oly to be available because it was pretty flat. Rocketts Landing will be my first also if I am injury free by then.

Naylor's Beach was my first Oly and I thought it was WAY more challenging than any I've done since then.  You can check out my race report from 2006:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=53738

In short, I had to fight against the current the whole time, there are some big hills on the bike, and there is no shade on the run.  I don't think it's a race I'd do again.  Granted, when I did it, it was at the end of August and now it is in September, so it might not be as bad.  I just have some really bad memories of that race.

Out running or enjoying a fine glass of red...

The swim sucks. Major current issues. (Of course, I'm biased - I got yanked out of the water...but one of my friends who has done IM said the swim made her sick too...)

I did Naylors in September. It was interesting because it was POURING rain ALL morning JUST UNTIL 10 minutes prior to the start. It was crazy- there WAS no warmup. Because of the crazy downpour, there were flat tires right and left and I'm not exaggerating. The ride was quite hilly and there is minimal shade on the run but I still enjoyed it. It was my first open water swim, so I don't have anything to which to compare it. I was slower than I should have been, for sure. I love my technical t-shirt, too, even if it has a typo: 1.5k swim, 26k swim & 6k swim. Ha! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey Patrick,

I really liked the Giant Acorn up at Lake Anna.  10 am start and this year the weather was pretty nice and the water was warm enough for no wetsuit.  Nice bike and straightforward run.  Early Oct.
