Total Time = 5h 39m 47s
Overall Rank = 446/1059
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 96/207
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:50. Left for the race at about 5:45.
Event warmup:

None to speak of. Getting in to the event stole more time than I had planned, and there was no time to swim.
Swim
  • 46m 13s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

I think I have been faster, but I felt great. I wasn't short of breath, and really felt prepared. There was a problem with the course marking as the race directions suggested that we would be going around the sailboat, my line was set to go around the sailboat, but when I got there people were yelling from the boats that we were to cut the boat and turn at the buoys. That little problem cost me nearly 50 to 70 yards of swimming...
Transition 1
  • 02m 49s
Comments:

Pleased w. my transition. I had my shoes clipped to my pedals. No problems getting into them.
Bike
  • 2h 43m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.60 mile/hr
Comments:

I ate 4 cliff gels, and one cliff bar on the bike. I ate the gel at :15
:45, 1:15, 1:45, ate the bar at about 2:15. I thought this would be enough food, but I felt like I needed something near the end of the bike to keep my energy up. I also think I should have had the bar earlier, and gels later. Less more frequent water and g'ade.
What would you do differently?:

I don't think my nutrition strategy was good enough. I will have to research this a bit to find out what is recommended vs. what I did.
Transition 2
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

I felt a little scatter brained coming off of the bike.
Run
  • 2h 04m 45s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

It was so blasted hot. I had to stop at every aid station to cool down, it really hurt my running time, there just didn't seem to be any other way for me to finish.

N'tion. I drank gat'de at every station except for the first one. I made a mistake and only took ice at that station. I should have poured water on my head, and if the bike nutrition had gone better, I could have had a small drink. Sloshy stomach had me all messed up for four miles.
What would you do differently?:

Carry an air conditioner and generator.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat was a factor, but I am happy with my performance. I performed at my current fitness level

Event comments:

An absolutely great race. I look forward to next year!

I am still surprised by how well run the event was, they had roughly 1500 individuals, and relay teams on top of that, and the venue did not seem crowded. In fact, the labeled transition area, and 8 min. swim waves made Eagleman the nicest race I've ever done.

My Overall rankings are actually the Male rankings as there was no overall data given other than the fact that I was 583 / 1365 for the entire race.

Great job! I was supposed to be there as a volunteer but had a death in the family so I could not make it. It is my long term goal to do this race next year

Great race Matt....nice bike average with that wind! And those are good run splits in that heat...looks like my run time in a stand-alone 1/2 marathon, never mind after the swim and bike! Ya done good!

Congratulations Matt!  Great race in that heat!

I'd be interested to hear what your nutrition was like on the bike and what you think you'd do differently.  I'm getting ready for my first 1/2 in early Sept. and am trying to figure this stuff out too.
