Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention this.  It turned out that a friend of a friend lives in Racine and kindly offered up his home for my family to stay at the weekend of the race.  He was going to be out of town, but said he would leave the front door unlocked for us to get into the house.  I thanked him profusely and cancelled my hotel room.  When I showed up on Satuday, there was a note stuck to the door:

"Door was found open.  We checked the house and nothing appeared to be disturbed.  We relocked all doors.  Any questions, please call 262-XXX-XXX.  Mt. Plesant Police Department.  Officer xxxxxxx.  Badge #xx"

I guess my friend's door blew open, a neighbor saw the open door and called the cops, and the police locked up and left through the garage.  The neighbor and the police did exactly what they should have, but holy crap!  I quelled the panic, called my friend who encouraged me to try the windows and get creative.  I managed to push open the swivel window over the kitchen sink just enough to reach the hand crank . . . a little breaking and entering later . . . we had a place to stay.  Nothing like starting a tri weekend with some felonious activity.

Steve- - 2010-07-19 3:17 PM it was so great seeing you after the race with ice jammed into your quads...ha ha ha.

congrats on a great finish and your first HIM.

kimk - 2010-07-19 3:09 PM This was one of the toughest things I have ever done!  The volunteers were great as was the community out there with their hoses and cheering fans/donks out on the course! My quads seized up around mile 50 of the bike and did the death march/runners shuffle through the whole 13.1 miles. But I finished with a smile

ya I ended back in the med tent with an IV about an hour later!

I also hydrated like crazy for at least 5 days leading up to this race.  I drank a LOT on the bike (pre-mixed nutrition, Perform and water) and my quads were still a wreck - especially at those first hills after the turn around.  I had to walk up the one right before the first aid station... just as I looked up a guy with a camera says 'sorry'  yup -  that race photo is going to suck.  Shortly after that aid station I realized that I wasn't sweating anymore and hit every aid station walking.  I drank everything and dumped ice into my tri suit (tru).

On a quick side note - anyone know who any of these 3 are:

Rumor has it that one of them was featured in a BT documentary and is also on the Tri Donkai (sp?) team - I didn't know who they were when we were talking - about a broken wetsuit zipper.

Wow! you started out with a HIM?  That's impressive.

Congrats to everyone.  It was a great experience, and fun getting to meet new people. Good Luck with the rest of your races.

I was never sore after the race and it has me wondering if I really gave it my all on race day. Felt like I was giving my all on the bike and run when i was doing it but now, not so sure as I never felt beat up from the race. Might be just because I couldn't reach my physical potential that day due to my stupid bkfst. Oh well.

I had a great time in Racine. I just want to thank all the BT people that treated me so well. I have spoken more about the hospitality I received then the race. Special thanks to "trixie" and Pete and his family! My brother and I were touched by your hospitality.

I had a blast at dinner!

Overall I am proud that I finished doing the race.

Oh, and one other side note...they ran out of medals by the time I FINALLY got to the finish line...how lame is that???

ok, seriously...that is WAY LAME!!!  I mean, can they not count or did people really take more than 1 medal...either way, it's lame.

If you want mine, no prob...seriously, send me a PM and I can mail it to you.  You trained harder for it than I.

Aww, that's so sweet! No, they told us, after a certain time, they ran out, so anyone after that, they're being mailed.

But still...how do you not know how many people do your race?

I saw some kids wearing medals!! I was a little upset.
