Comments:

This was my first ever DNF (Did Not Finish). I have to say that it was not my goal for the weekend. About 200 meters in as we were coming down the hill on the start I tripped across a chain that was in the dirt (it had previously been used to rope off the loop as there was construction in that area). I truely did not think that it was that bad and even kept right on pace till about mile 14. From mile 14 to mile 18 I hobbled down to a pace where i was too far out to make it back to the start by the 6 hour cut off. At mile 18 1/2 I was pulled from the course to close down aid stations.
What would you do differently?:

Pay better attention to where I put my feet.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad day at the races!

Event comments:

The issues with this race were my own and not the events. I have had a great time the last several years at this event and still recommend it as a beautiful run for those that have not been to Sedona!

Course: THE FULL MARATHON RACE Starts at the high point of Cultural Park Place near a Forest Service Trailhead then the course travels northwest down hill then travels uphill to the southeast then a Left to the northeast and takes a Right to the southeast with the intersection of Navoti Drive. Take a Left to the northeast onto Navoti Drive, through the intersection with Bristlecone Pines Road. Take the next Right to the southeast, just north of the Sedona Medical Center. Turn Left at Hwy 89A next to the sidewalk on the north side of the westbound lanes. Left turn onto Dry Creek Road on the west side of the street. Continue on Dry Creek Road to the "T" intersection. Take a Left onto Boynton Canyon Road. At the next "T" take a Left onto a new paved road called Boynton Pass Road or Forest Service 152C. This dirt road goes over a pass and has many "s" curves and can use the entire road width. At the "T" intersection take a left onto FS 525. 100ft past the intersection with FS 525 on top of a hill is the turn around for the course; returning the same path. Once returned to Cultural Park Place and Navoti Drive the course takes a Right onto Cultural Park Place and stays Right on the paved surface and follows this road downhill to the Left for the Finish where the Start was.

Sorry to hear about your DNF.  I did the race as well and know that chain you're referring to.  I didn't look to the sides to see what it was connected to but I remember thinking that it's probably one of those chains they just pull up to close that section of the road like they do at national parks and stuff.

Looks like you still made it quite far in the run considering that though.  It's amazing how things we don't think are a big deal can affect you when you're going that kind of distance.  Hope you're recovering ok from it.

You're also right, it's an incredibly scenic race... but also incredibly hilly.
