Virginia Beach, Virginia
United States
J&A Racing
30F / -1C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 26m 2s
Overall Rank = 975/2053
Age Group = F25-29
Age Group Rank = 102/262
Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal, coffee, and water, drive to the race and get lost, still make it in plenty of time cause I'm good like that.
Event warmup:

That was it - stay warm! It was a COLD morning, Kate and I stayed in her car, then walked out to the tent, the walked out to start and did some half-assed stretches.
Run
  • 1h 26m 2s
  • 8.7 miles
  • 09m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Kate and I stayed together and ran easy for the first 10k, finished on goal of just at an hour. Then she took off, she was feeling strong and ran for it. I started to push too, but the winds were killing me. I had a lot of "kick" in me the last mile or so once we were in the amphitheater and a little sheltered. The whole run felt strong and, despite the cold/wind/snow, didn't really hurt. I kind of liked it a lot. A year ago, I couldn't run a 5K without stopping, and yesterday I ran 14k...and thought it was easy...
What would you do differently?:

My game plan was to pace 10 min/mile until mile 6 and then just dig deep and push. I should have dug deeper - I could have pulled off a little better than I did on that back 3 miles, but I held back. JUST EFFING DO IT NEXT TIME.
Post race
Warm down:

Collect goodies in the finish chute, watch for Jen and Norm, collect free beer and dance with Kate to average cover band in the tent. Should I have stretched??

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mind over matter...

Event comments:

I would do the distance and the organization again, but this particular course was a LITTLE boring. Didn't feel like 3000 people in a race, biggest race I've ever been in and felt comfortable. Great race, very well done.

Good race Marilyn. You ought to come up to Richmond and do the Monument Ave 10k next month. With 35000 entrants it is the 3rd largest race of any distance in America. It is well run and amazing.

Good luck on the half. You are an inspiration to me. If I can keep from tripping again at the Tavern and crashing my bike like I did at the Richmond sprint last year I will surely kick your butt at this year's Tavern Tri. Smile I have gotten very clumsy since I turned 43.
