My year long goal is Muskoka 70.3, registared and training already, my question is what are the hills like, it it varried grade or long and painful or short and steep. I plan on riding the crse once the snow is gone (may or juneish) but am trying to find some similar areas around my house to get me in the hilly groove so to say. Thanks

I don't remember where I got it from but there is an elevation profile I found and posted on my blog.

I haven't ridden it yet either but look forward to it before the 70.3

For me - I found lots of short and sharp hills scattered throughout - including in the last 5k.  I did this the first year - rained a lot during parts of the bike, there were still lots of residents sitting out cheering away. I will be back this year.

Once you get to the north part of the course (I think it's hwy 60 or 35) it just steadily increases... untrained you may have to get out of the saddle.  East side is faster (more rolling than peakish) from what I remember and the big hills are on the West side with one really fast downhill.

I did the race last year and loved it! The bike course is rally not that bad. The first 10 to 15km are full of sharp, short dips and climbs. I took it very easy on the first section and was glad I did. The next 60 is rather 'normal' - I seem to recall lots of long, gentle grades interspursed with pleasant flat sections. The last 10 to 15 is very similar to the first. This is the section where I was glad I took it easy in the first 15km. ... oh, and that final hill leading back to Deerhurst and T2 is just un-necessary cruelty. Surprised

I want to do the race this year but my sister decided to get married that weekend. How inconsiderate of her - all she's getting from me is a cheap toaster.

pretty much agree with the above. Being from pancake flat southern ontario, I found the end pretty tough and pretty much blew up on my run. Hard to train for hills, when I don't have any. But overall, the tough ones were short and steep, the problem for me was it was also a short downhill on the other side, with not enough rest time, before you were going back up again. It took its toll on my. But having said all that, its a fantastic race. FishHog
