Sunny

Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Rode for an hour with Mark. I think we rode pretty steady - maybe a bit hard.
Event warmup:

Ran just a little. Layed out the stuff in transition.
Forgot to stop, get calm, and stretch. Also forgot to hit the shot of gel.
There are so many cool folks at these races - it's hard not to get distracted and socialize! :)
Swim
  • 22m
  • 1646 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

That was my best OW swim! When I lost focus, my navigation SUCKED, but I swam hard and steady on the second lap. Managed to pass Stacers and finished ahead of markdills38! (Mark smoked me last time!!!)
I had MAJOR leg cramps when exiting the water. Actually needed some help to walk, so that will screw up my official swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Needed to have stretched and cooled down a bit more after the hour ride. I always suspect dehydration when cramping too. My day was 14 hours old by the time I cramped - it makes the nutrition & hydration tougher than at morning races. I'll keep practicing and learning! :)
Transition 1
  • 07m
Comments:

Bad cramps!
I was sort of aware of mark running to his towel and then leaving on the run - same with Stacers. I just couldn't go yet. Dang!
What would you do differently?:

Stretch & hydrate better.
Run
  • 25m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Now's when I realized that I forgot that hit of gel. I felt like I was out of gas when I started running. Legs made a good quick transition from swimming/cramping to running. Pace was much faster than i expected from transition.
Had my HR higher than on the last race (in May). Felt like I went as hard as I could. I was uncertain if I went too hard if I would cramp or pull something. In the last 1/2 mile I heard a woman coming up behind me (I knew exactly who it was because just after my turnaround we passed each other and I could see her mark me. I could see her eyes and she wanted to catch me) and I thought "good for her, she found a rabbit and she's going to catch me!" A second later I thought "what? what am I doing?" and I gently started picking up the pace until I finished running 7 even. I spoke with her afterwards and we were both laughing about our race at the end. She REALLY wanted to reel me in! ha!
What would you do differently?:

Given everything above - I wouldn't do anything differently.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and stretched. Drank several bottles of water and gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cramps!! doh!

On decision making below - I would say it was good during the race, but so bad before the race that the during the race part doesn't count!

Event comments:

These guys have no idea how to set a swim course to length. They have very little to offer after the race. And, these are my favorite races! I wish we did this every week!!!! :)
(To be fair, they have nice raffle items to give away after the race!)

There will be no passing me in the next race either! HAHA.  I agree, I think we went a bit hard during that bike ride, but oh well, we will be faster every race from here on out!  Nice race!  Did you forget to hydrate?  HEEHEE
