i did this race last year and used a road bike, because its the only bike i had.  plenty of people with tri bikes, and 2 or so bigger hills (although it was a 3 loop course so 6 times).  if i had a tri bike id go with that.

good luck on getting your tri bike.  i should be at the race, depending on the condition of my knee - its been bothering me lately during my runs, but hopefully it gets better.  last year it got to about 95F and i forgot sunscreen - a big mistake on my part so you might also want to keep that in mind.

hope your knee problem is not too bad?
Thanks for the info. I want to place, as Scotland is my home town and great reason to take another trip home.

Drove the Bike portion when I was up there for the 10K Saturday and took a look at the run course... Cant wait to get on it with the bike.  Not many hills where I am so I'm in for a punishment LOL.

How were the new sections?  I was riding there one day when the trail crew was out there and they did mention that most of the fall-line stuff was going, so I was hearing they made it a bit less challenging, but are making up for it by adding a lot of swoopy fast single track.

If this weather holds I'll be hitting it up on the 17th.

I'll be racing down in Richmond for my first time this year. I didn't race it last year. I've read reports that the 2nd run was pretty short last year (about 2.6 miles) but I can't believe how fast the 1st run was! Does anyone know if the opening 10k was short as well?

Also, I have the option of running a Zipp 404 or Zipp disk in the rear. Does anyone have a recommendation for either?

I'm looking forward to the Championship, as I haven't raced in one since 2001! Best of luck to all, thanks.

Fast, Flowy, Fun.  They are a bit less technical, but that can be made up by riding faster. Smile

Wow.. just got the recent email about du nats.. did they start the off-road event at 1:00 in the afternoon last year too?  Good thing it doesn't look to be nearly as warm this year, but wow, talk about a late start.

Another thing I thought was funny.. I only have to beat one person to place in my age group.

Last year they started earlier and also had a packet pickup on Friday.  There is only packet pickup on Saturday and the on-road athletes have to check in their bikes Saturday evening, too.

I did the on-road shorter distance race last year and started at 3:30.  It was miserable with the heat.  Hoping it is a lot cooler this year!

I went to a clinic for the race last Saturday, and the coach Dave (Endorphin) said that the tri bike would be faster if you comfortable staying in areo.  Some of the riding is curvy so you have to make that call.

Looks like it may be a little cooler and possibly wet. Maybe even lightning. What do they do if there is lightning? It would just be a lot more enjoyable if it was a nice cool spring day. Ahh......feel the cool breeze......hear the birds sing...........and chasing down the next person in front of you until you barf.....

ha.. now I'm wondering about the possibility of mud in the off road race..   if it does rain, I guess it's time to throw out any time goals and just wing it.

Hopefully those scattered thunderstorms for Sunday will be in the afternoon as the heat builds... Saturday looks like it might be a challenge for the Off Road folks and bike check-in.  Still showing 30% of showers on Saturday and 60% on Sunday.

Good luck all!

Make sure you check the website if you want to pre-ride!  The Junior race is going on and they will disqualify anyone who is out on the course during certain times.  I don't remember the exact times, but I think it is 12 - 2.

I'm not sure if I am racing right now.  I twisted my ankle pretty bad last Saturday and am still having a lot of pain, so I'm not sure if it is worth trying to race.  Running down the big hills in the first mile will be kind of challenging with a sore ankle.

From the site:

Absolutely NO Pre-Riding Bike Course Between 12-1:00 on Saturday for Youth Race

For the safety of the Youth On-Road competitors, you will be disqualified if you pre-ride the course on 2nd or Spring Streets between 12 noon and 1pm on Saturday, April 24. This will be strictly enforced for the safety of the youth competitors. If you are caught on the bike course between 12-1:00 on Saturday, you will be not be allowed to compete on Sunday.

FYI: I'll be the bald guy with a gaotee wearing red and black - so I'll be easy to find....lol

Yeah, I read that, thanks for the heads up, I'd be ok with riding it Friday, too, if that's better for anyone. If you'd like to meet up PM I'll throw my digits at ya!

Sorry Trixie I will be working Friday and you probably wouldn't want to ride my (slow) pace ... lol
I did run the 5k route last night, figured it was good practice in the rain. It is a busy route but not a bad run. The 1st 5k does have a big downhill start and both runs will have a little uphill run just prior to the dash to transition or the finish. The 2nd run does have some of the downhill from the 1st but after you run out a bit first. I hope everyone coming has a great race and enjoys Richmond while they are here. If any out of towners need any info PM me and I will help if I can.
