Overall Rank = 129/259
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/16
Pre-race routine:

Got up at about 4 am. I had some cereal and water and left for the race site at 4:50 am. Got there and set up transition and used the porta potty. My usual.
Event warmup:

Stretched and took a short jog.
Swim
  • 22m 11s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Oh my god!!! What a terrible, horrible, aweful swim. My worst performance to date! I seriously almost gave up, but I didn't. I watched two other guys call for the lifeguards as I was flailing past them.
What would you do differently?:

Train, train, train, train....
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

Good T-1 as usual. I was 4th in my age group for T-1 time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. At least I can do this right. Maybe its because I am so happy to be out of the water...
Bike
  • 32m 42s
  • 13 miles
  • 23.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty decent ride. Not my best placing but I'm not near as embarrassed by my bike as I am by the dang swim...
What would you do differently?:

Train...
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

Not a bad T-2. I was under a minute, so I'm pretty happy with that. Struggled with the shoes a little bit which probably added about 5 - 10 secs.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice a little, but I wouldn't worry too much about this one. I'm certainly not going to move into contention with any improvements here.
Run
  • 28m 37s
  • 3.8 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm a little disappointed with my run because I usually place better.
What would you do differently?:

Train...
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and walked back to collect my junk and head home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training.

Event comments:

OK, this was by far the worst race I ever did. The swimming took so much out of me that I really think it impacted my bike and run legs noticeably. The surf was pretty high which I think had a big mental impact on my performance, but lets face it, my swim training has been pathetic to no-existent so what should I have expected? This was a real wake-up call to me and I know I can do much better than I did here in this race. Let's see what I do with this.

Don't beat yourself up so hard about that swim Sam, friggin' thing was brutal! I think it was definitely long too. I can't verify your measurements on the rest of the course though, my Garmin turned into a brick when I tried switching it to bike mode. I hear you on the training though brother, my swimming has been non-existent as well. Like someone told me that morning, we race our way into shape

The swim was brutal...the only thing that kept me going was survival mode.

My computer measured the bike course at 11.33 miles.  Not sure about the run.

Sam, I have to agree with Mike...don't beat yourself up. I've heard from everyone that this was a brutal swim ~ besides, it's what you do with this that matters and if I know you, this will just kick your butt into the gear it needs to be in (and if that doesn't work ~ I'm here for a few good kickings!)

Thanks for the words guys.  It's hard not to be critical of oneself particularly when you know you are capable of doing much better.
