Not exactly "high tech" though.

I have a Rocky Mountain Solo CXD (disc brake, cx bike) that I bought for commuting.  I need to find a good rear rack for use with disc brakes, on a 700 wheel.  I've been looking at axiom, but I'm having problems finding something to clear the brakes, and fit a rack and fenders.

My bike is 2009, but it looks like the 2010 RM Metropolis SEA is the same bike, spec'ed a little different.

Can anyone help me out with other good brands of racks?  Experience in fitting racks?  Am I going to have to just come up with a homemade fix?

TIA

Have you tried googling it?

Anyway, I've installed pretty much every option out there and the Topeak option was by far the way to go. http://www.bikeman.com/RK2526.html

I'd only get the axiom journey if you don't have rack mounts on the bike.

I have Avenir on my Surly. It does have braze on rack mounts and doesn't interfere with the brakes operating.

BTW: Fenders are also key for a commuter bike.

I had a very difficult time finding a rack for my roadie Trek 2.1.  It didn't have braze ons but I was able to find a skewer mount Old Man Mountain rack.  They make them for disc brakes also.

I've done some looking around. I was interested in actual experience with disc/700c combos.

I'm trying to get in contact with RM to see if they recommend anything.

Do you have discs on the surly?

I have upper mounts, and there is a boss just below the disc caliper.  The problem is finding an arm with enough backward clearance.  I see them with 4cm, but I need about 4 inches.  I'll check out the avenir though.  Thanks.

Well, I've put hundreds of racks on bikes. Many with Disc brakes. If you have braze ons then the Topeak is the best option.

Can I throw a wrench into your plans?  I went through a bunch of trouble to install a rack and buy panniers for my bike a few years ago.  I rode with the panniers once and hated it.  The wierd weight distribution made cycling difficult, and then when I got off my bike I didn't like unhooking the bag and the akwarkd arrangement of my stuff.   I then tried attaching a basket to my rack, which was more convenient but even more difficult to balance.

I quickly went to a backpack and haven't changed since.    The weight of the pack helps my weight distribution, even better than riding without it.

Of course, this assumes you're talking about commuting day trips and not multi-day tours.  I am pretty sure longer touring calls for a rack and bags.

Thanks for the tips.  Basically, this is going to be my commuter bike, to ride about 15 miles each way, back and forth from work.  Any touring or bonus rides are purely extra.  I don't anticipate much of that, at this point.

I need enough room for a laptop bag, lunch, change of clothes, and emergency supplies.  I can leave shoes at work, so that'll save some space.
