Champion 10742 Ames, IA | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! scotty930 - 2010-09-20 12:20 PM So I had Ironman Branson 70.3 this weekend. I am going to say that I come from a flat state, where if i do a 1000 feet of ascending and descending, I consider that my hill work out ride! This bike course had 7000 feet of ascending and descending and I could tell you it was tough. There was not a flat stretch on this ride at all. It was either up or down the whole way. Overall I was happy with my time, 5:56:06. My swim was good, bike was faster than Kansas, and my run was a little slower, but I was expecting that after the hills on the course. My time was only 7 minutes off of kansas 70.3 time, so I think overall my training was quite well for this race. My race report will follow here shortly. Nice job! Sounds like a brutal course. I was tracking you and a couple of other guys I know. When I saw the first bike splits coming in I was a little confused. After looking at the course profile I understood what was going on. A friend of mine who went 4:40 in his first HIM last year took 6 hours yesterday so you should be happy with how things went for you. |

You must be ecstatic. I'm really happy for you. You're probably anxious to ramp up the activity, but take it easy. As I'm finding with my shins, one day they feel great and are not inhibiting my work out, and the next, not so much. Clearly I'm not 100%. You don't want to suffer any more setbacks, Judi. |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! I got permission to get on the trainer tonight after moving my cleats back as much as I could. I could do 15 minutes if no pain, called it at 10 cause the medial aspect was tight. Twas wonderful until the tightness started. |

I'm glad you were able to get out of the boot and on the bike, if only for a bit. Sorry your doctor was an uncaring twit, but at least it sounds like you've got a great PT that will get you going again. |

He laughed.....I suspect I'm not the first person to pitch a fit about this guy. |

When I train with Team in Training and have a run coach, we do some drills before we run: grapevine, high knees (skips), butt kicks, run backwards, side to side, etc. Don't know if this is what you are looking for or not as they aren't necessarily "form" drills. I've also had seasons where they mentioned doing the following to help prevent injury: Walk on tip-toes, walk on heels, walk on inside of feet, walk on outside of foot. These are for short distances, but it helps strengthen some of those muscles and ligaments and can help prevent injury. Again, not sure if this is what you are looking for. Sorry if it's not. |

Thanks in advance. Well, I don't do any running drills, but maybe I should. Here's a couple of links: link1 link2 #2 has video demonstration. Again, I haven't done these so I can't speak on how beneficial they are |

So sorry to hear about this set back, Judi. Going back to the boot was probably a really good idea. Take it easy...I'm sure you'll be good to go soon. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED! What do you guys all use for drinks in training and races? I have been using WAR (Workout Anabolic Recovery) and it is good for muscle recovery, but I am not sure if it is the best for endurance. I have tried alot of Heed flavors, but what do people think? What about endurance Gatorade? |

What about endurance Gatorade? I was a big fan of gatorade endurance before I switched over to infinit for IM training. In my opinion it has one of the better electrolyte profiles. Before that, I had tried a few others but never found anything that I really liked to use. Heed may be my least favorite of the bunch, but I'll drink it if its on the course. |

I have heard of those first ones you were mentioning. I have done some of those too. I think what I was looking for was more along the lines of the second set you mentioned, to strengthen muscles and ligaments to help prevent injury. I am going to look some of those up to see them. Thanks for the help. Edited by scotty930 2010-10-08 8:39 AM |
