Pre-race routine:

Drove into Albuquerque day before, picked up race packet and to my suprise I had been issued #1 (by no means reflective of place) I noticed that morning that tread was missing and thread was showing on the rear tire. Found a replacement on the clearance table. Went to a running store, had an analysis done on the treadmill. Bought new shoes, and left them in the box on race day. Enjoyed the strange looks given to me by the Hilton staff as I wheeled my mountain bike through the hotel lobby.

Race day: Breakfast consisted of whole grain bagels, banana and Almond butter.
Event warmup:

Rode part of the course. Stretched.

Bike-Run-Swim event

Ran from the transition area to the building...walked through hallway and down stairs, jumped in first pool, swam first 200 meters, climbed out, jumped into second pool (which was much colder)and swam second 200 meters.
What would you do differently?:

What I COULD do differently is, well...spend more time at the pool.

Bike-Run-Swim event.

This was my favorite bike leg of the season.

We started with a run (imagine the click, click, click of about 90 cleated competitors) to where our bikes were parked at the start line, then took off. I was half expecting the organizers to move our bikes around.

Course consisted of two 3-mile laps over mixed terrain: pavement, hardpack, sand, and a little bit of grass and mud. It was a very non-technical course that I think it would be suitable for cyclocross (I think the winner was on a crosser.) I kept the rubber side down and avoided group crashes, but had to dismount a few of times and run with my bike in deep sand (the key is not to stop, but its easier said than done in a group). Actually got to ride and fight for position within the group.
What would you do differently?:

Somewhere a cyclocross bike is calling me.

5k on hardpack loop. Spent the first mile concentrating on form and getting my running legs back. Downed a gel at the halfway point before getting to the water station.
What would you do differently?:

Do more trail training.
Post race
Warm down:

A little bit of stretching and a shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not exactly famous for being fast...but I have a good time. I suspect my swims would be better if I went to the pool more often.

Event comments:

A good non-technical off-road race that wouldn't be real intimidating for the beginner. Also found the other competitors to be more laid back than at some of my other races. Could it be a mountain bike thing?
